Description
Mount Bromo (2,329 m) is an iconic active volcano in East Java, rising from the vast Sea of Sand (Segara Wedi) inside the giant Tengger caldera, flanked by Mount Batok with Mount Semeru on the horizon. Though relatively low, Bromo is one of Indonesia's most famous mountains thanks to its sunrise panorama from Penanjakan and its sulphur-belching crater rim. The ascent is short and non-technical: from Cemoro Lawang village people cross the sand sea and climb about 250 concrete steps to the crater rim. Bromo is sacred to the Tengger people, who each year hold the Yadnya Kasada ceremony, casting offerings into the crater. The area is managed as Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park, with access controlled through several official gateways.

Routes
Cemoro Lawang → Laut Pasir → tangga kawah (rute klasik)
Mudah / non-teknisThe most popular route to Bromo's crater rim, starting from Cemoro Lawang village (Probolinggo side) across the Sea of Sand (Segara Wedi) — often on foot, by horse, or by jeep — then climbing about 250 concrete steps to the active crater edge. Suitable for all; the rim is not fully fenced, so caution is needed around sulphur gas and the drop.
SourcePenanjakan / Seruni Point (titik pandang matahari terbit)
Sangat mudah (wisata sunrise)Bromo's iconic sunrise experience: from lodgings around Cemoro Lawang or Wonokitri, visitors take a pre-dawn jeep to the Penanjakan or Seruni Point viewpoints overlooking the caldera. From here the silhouettes of Bromo, Mount Batok, and Semeru rise above a sea of mist at dawn. This is not a summit climb but a way to enjoy the Tengger caldera panorama.
SourceClimbing Experiences
The Mount Bromo experience centres on two things: watching sunrise from the Penanjakan/Seruni Point viewpoints and a short climb to the crater rim from Cemoro Lawang, crossing the Sea of Sand and then climbing about 250 steps. The videos below document real journeys by hikers and travellers to Bromo's active crater, complete with sunrise panoramas, sulphur fumes, and the atmosphere of the Sea of Sand in the Tengger caldera.
