Description

Mount Binaiya is the highest peak on Seram Island and the tallest mountain in Maluku Province, reaching 3,027 metres within Manusela National Park. It is not a volcano but a non-volcanic highland massif covering roughly 20% of Seram Island. As one of the Seven Summits of Indonesia, Binaiya is a prestigious mountaineering objective in eastern Indonesia. The southern trail from Piliana village takes 4–5 days return, while the longer northern route from Kanikeh village — recently reactivated by the park authority — can require up to 11 days. The trek is extremely demanding, involving roughly 22 consecutive ridges with continuous ascents and descents through dense jungle and river crossings, making a local guide and porters both mandatory and essential. Manusela National Park also harbours Maluku endemic fauna including cassowaries, cuscuses, and several rare parrot and cockatoo species.

Routes

Jalur Selatan via Negeri Piliana — rute utama saat ini

Sangat berat (jalur panjang, banyak punggungan, medan berlumpur, wajib pemandu & porter lokal)
4–8 hari pulang-pergi (kemah beberapa malam di dalam hutan)

The most commonly used route today to the Binaiya summit (3,027 m) departs from Piliana village on the southern side, Central Maluku Regency. The trail crosses Manusela National Park through very dense tropical rainforest and a series of ridges climbed and descended in turn. The climb spans several days camping in the forest, with river crossings and muddy terrain. Given the remoteness and navigational complexity, climbers must use guides and porters from Piliana. The best season is the dry season (roughly April–October).

Jalur Utara via Kanikeh (rute historis)

Sangat berat (terpencil, minim jejak, membutuhkan pemandu berpengalaman)
Beberapa hari; lebih panjang dan jarang dipakai dibanding jalur Piliana

Before the Piliana route became dominant, some Binaiya climbs approached from the north via Kanikeh village inside Manusela National Park. This route crosses the more rarely travelled interior forest of Seram Island, demanding experienced guides and thorough preparation. The two routes are also sometimes combined for a traverse across the national park.

Climbing Experiences

Mount Binaiya (3,027 m) is the highest peak of Seram Island, the roof of Maluku Province, and one of Indonesia's Seven Summits. The most common route now starts from Piliana village on the southern side, crossing Manusela National Park through very dense tropical rainforest. Climbers describe a long multi-day effort (often 4–8 days round trip), numerous ridges to traverse, muddy terrain, river crossings, and full reliance on guides and porters from Piliana. The quiet forest, Manusela's biodiversity, and the cultural stories of Seram's people are hallmark parts of the journey to Maluku's roof.
