Description
Mount Batur (Gunung Batur) is an active stratovolcano rising to 1,717 m at the center of two concentric calderas in Kintamani district, Bangli Regency, Bali. Its outer caldera — approximately 13.8×10 km across and among the largest on Earth — contains the crescent-shaped Lake Batur spanning about 16 km². Eruptions have been recorded at least 26 times since 1804, with the most destructive in 1926 and the most recent in 2000. In September 2012, the caldera was formally admitted to UNESCO's Global Geopark Network as Indonesia's first geopark, covering a 370 km² area of geological heritage. The sunrise trek to the summit takes roughly two hours from the standard trailhead at Toya Bungkah; climbers must use a licensed guide from the local HPGB guide association.

Routes
Jalur Pura Jati (South Trail alternatif)
SedangAn alternative southern route starting near Pura Jati temple (toward Kedisan), about 2 km from Toya Bungkah. It gives more open views of Lake Batur and is often used as the descent line after following the rim westward from the summit, crossing black lava fields on a fairly clear path.
SourceJalur Toya Bungkah (rute sunrise standar)
Sedang / ramah pemulaThe classic and most popular route, starting from the Batur carpark (~1,065 m) or Toya Bungkah village ~1 km to the southwest. The trail crosses vegetable plots on lava flows, then climbs steep, sometimes slippery flanks to the first warung on the southern rim (~1.5 h), with a further ~30 min of steep ascent to the upper rim. It is the route used by most guided sunrise treks, and a local guide is now mandatory.
SourceSusur Rim Kawah / Crater Rim (perpanjangan puncak)
Menantang (bagian sempit & terekspos)An extension for hikers wanting to walk the crater rim — roughly 500 m along the rim edge, the most exciting but most exposed section, with narrow, steep passages sometimes needing hand support. It can be continued eastward along the rim or toward recent lava fields, subject to volcanic activity and closures.
SourceClimbing Experiences
The Mount Batur (1,717 m) experience in Kintamani, Bali almost always centres on a pre-dawn climb to catch sunrise from the caldera rim. Hikers typically set off around 03:30–04:00 from the Toya Bungkah area, crossing plots on old lava flows before a steep, sandy push to the rim, guided by a now-mandatory local guide. From the top, trip reports highlight the panorama over Lake Batur, distant Mount Agung and Rinjani, geothermal steam near the crater, and crowds that can build up in peak season. Both Indonesian (via Toya Bungkah) and foreign accounts agree the route is moderate and beginner-friendly, though the darkness and gravelly terrain call for care.
