Information

Elevation
3.088 m
Country
Indonesia (ID)
Location / Range
Pegunungan Iyang-Argopuro, Suaka Margasatwa Dataran Tinggi Yang, Jawa Timur
Mountain type
Gunung berapi kompleks yang sudah tidak aktif; puncak tertinggi Pegunungan Iyang-Argopuro dengan beberapa puncak (Rengganis, Argopuro, Hyang)
Volcanic?
Yes — volcano
Coordinates
-7.9645, 113.5665
Difficulty
Sedang–berat karena jarak, bukan teknis. Jalur terpanjang di Pulau Jawa (~63 km lintas Baderan–Bremi), umumnya ditempuh 3–5 hari; medan hutan, sabana, dan sumber air berjauhan menuntut manajemen logistik & stamina
Best Season
Musim kemarau April–Oktober (jalur kering, sabana terbuka). Hindari musim hujan (November–Maret) yang membuat trek berlumpur, sungai deras, dan pacet aktif
Permits & Rules

Description

Gunung Argopuro (local spelling Argapura, 3,088 m) is the highest peak of the dormant Iyang-Argopuro volcanic complex in East Java, stretching between Mount Semeru and Mount Raung. Unlike Java's other single-cone volcanoes, Argopuro is a broad massif with valleys up to 1,000 m deep and several summits — the best-known being Puncak Rengganis, with the true high point, Argopuro, roughly 200 m to its south and marked by a triangulation pillar. It is renowned as the LONGEST hiking route on Java, about 63 km on the classic traverse from Baderan (Situbondo) to Bremi (Probolinggo), typically taking 3–5 days. Its appeal is the shifting landscape: dense Dipterocarp and montane forest, the vast Cikasur savanna — a former colonial/Japanese-era airstrip now a grassland laced with wild watercress streams — and the tranquil Taman Hidup lake. The area is the Yang Highlands Wildlife Reserve, home to deer, peafowl, wild boar, and the rare Javan leopard. Puncak Rengganis is steeped in legend: local folklore holds that the goddess Dewi Rengganis dwells there. Argopuro challenges through its distance and remoteness rather than its altitude, demanding careful water and logistics planning.

Routes

Jalur Baderan (Situbondo) — pintu utara, awal lintas Baderan→Bremi

Menengah–berat; non-teknis tetapi menuntut stamina multi-hari dan manajemen air
4–6 hari (umumnya sebagai lintas Baderan→Bremi); ±40 km dari sisi ini

The start at Baderan (~780 m asl) is gentle and long, making it relatively 'relaxed' for a staged ascent but very time-consuming. The main posts in order: Baderan basecamp → Mata Air 1 and Mata Air 2 water sources (~1,830–2,165 m) → Cikasur savanna (~2,215 m, a former Dutch colonial-era airstrip and the widest grassland on the route, crossed by watercress streams) → Cisentor (~2,525 m, trail junction) → Rawa Embik (~2,755 m, the last water source before the summit) → Puncak Rengganis and Puncak Argopuro (3,088 m). Because water sources are far apart, careful water planning is essential on this route.

The start at Bremi (~990 m asl) is steeper but faster to the summit, making it the 'express' option for strong hikers. This route is the closest access to Taman Hidup lake (~2,100 m), a mountain lake almost always shrouded in mist. In the popular Baderan→Bremi traverse, hikers descend this side via Cisentor → Taman Hidup lake → Bremi (a final segment of about 7 km, ~6.5 hours). Because it climbs more steeply, the Bremi side feels more physically draining per day than the gentler Baderan side.

Climbing Experiences

The Argopuro hiking experience is defined by one impression: it is far and long. Nearly every account is the Baderan (Situbondo) to Bremi (Probolinggo) traverse over 3–5 days along the longest hiking route on Java (~63 km). Recurring themes: seemingly endless dense forest, the vast Cikasur savanna — a former old airstrip laced with wild watercress streams — the misty Taman Hidup lake, tight water management because sources are far apart, biting cold on the savanna at night, and the mystical atmosphere and Dewi Rengganis legend around the summit. Many hikers stress careful logistics and fitness planning, not for technical difficulty but for the distance and remoteness.
