Description
Aragats (4,090 m at its north summit) is the highest mountain in Armenia and the highest point of the Lesser Caucasus, rising roughly 40 km northwest of the capital Yerevan. This dormant shield volcano has four summits encircling a large crater 3 km wide and 350 m deep: North (4,090 m, highest), West (4,001 m), East (3,908 m), and South (3,879 m, most accessible). As the 'roof of Armenia', Aragats is the country's most iconic trekking destination, popular with locals and international visitors alike. The most common starting point is Lake Kari (3,200 m), reachable by regular vehicle, making the southern summit — roughly 2–3 km away — achievable in 3–4 hours without technical skills. The northern summit demands better fitness and reliable navigation. On clear days the view from the top encompasses the majestic Mount Ararat across the Turkish border, the city of Yerevan, and the vast Ararat Plain below.

Routes
Jalur Danau Kari → Puncak Selatan (3.879 m) — Rute Paling Populer
Trekking menengah — tidak ada keahlian teknis; medan berkerikil/berbatu di lereng atas; akses kendaraan biasa ke titik awal 3.200 mThe most common and recommended route for first-time Aragats climbers, heading to the south summit (3,879 m, the lowest of the four but still impressive). The start point at Lake Kari (3,200 m) is reachable by regular vehicle from Yerevan (~2 hours), cutting out much of the elevation gain. From Lake Kari, hikers ascend about 680 m vertically through grassy and rocky slopes to the crater rim, then follow the rim to the south summit. Views here are stunning — Mount Ararat across the Turkish border (in clear weather) and the entire Ararat Plain below. The trail has no official markers but is reasonably clear in fine weather; fog and storms can arrive suddenly even in summer.
Route Segments
- 1
Danau Kari (3.200 m) → Tepian Kawah
Lereng berumput yang cukup curam; medan berbatu di bagian atas; tidak ada jalur jelas tapi navigasi mudah di cuaca cerah
- 2
Tepian Kawah → Puncak Selatan (3.879 m)
Menyusuri rim kawah; angin kencang mungkin terjadi; pemandangan kawah dan Ararat jika cerah
Jalur Danau Kari → Puncak Utara (4.090 m) — Puncak Tertinggi Armenia
Menengah–Berat — tidak teknis tetapi lebih panjang dan membutuhkan kondisi fisik prima; navigasi lebih menantang dari puncak selatanThe route to Aragats' highest summit (4,090 m, north peak) starts from the same Lake Kari, but continues much further along the crater rim northward. The journey is significantly longer than the south summit route, demanding greater stamina and more reliable navigation — especially on the final rocky section toward the highest point. From the north summit, views are panoramic across the entire Aragats massif, the crater below, and on clear days even distant Elbrus in the Greater Caucasus. The route has no fixed ropes or iron stakes; hikers must be confident on loose-rock terrain.
Route Segments
- 1
Danau Kari → Tepian Kawah Barat
Lereng berumput menuju rim; lebih landai dari arah barat
- 2
Tepian Kawah → Puncak Utara (4.090 m)
Menyusuri punggungan rim; medan berbatu; angin kencang di segmen terakhir; navigasi hati-hati jika berkabut
