Description

Mount Agung (3,031 m) in Karangasem is Bali's highest and most sacred active volcano, with Pura Besakih on its slopes. It erupted majorly in 1963 and became active again in 2017–2018. Routes go via Pura Besakih (to the full summit) and Pura Pasar Agung (to the crater rim). Many customary taboos apply, such as not bringing beef, and climbing is closed during religious ceremonies or when activity rises. Main hazards are volcanic activity, very steep rocky terrain, and cold.

Planning & Access

How to reach the trailhead, with transport alternatives.

Ngurah Rai Airport / Denpasar Pura Pasar Agung, Sebudi Village, Selat, Karangasem (shortest route to the crater rim)
  1. Car + driver hire (recommended) Recommended since the climb starts pre-dawn; many packages already include hotel transfer. · Often included in the 'with transfer' package.
  2. Taxi/ride-hailing Workable for the initial transfer but impractical for a midnight schedule into the highlands. · Fare varies by distance.

Denpasar/airport to the trailhead is about 2 hours, via Sebudi-Selat. The Pasar Agung route is ±3.5–5 hours to Summit 2 (not the highest peak), starting ~01:00–01:45 pre-dawn.

Ngurah Rai Airport / Denpasar Pura Besakih (route to Summit 1, 3,142 masl)
  1. Car + driver hire / package transfer Hotel pickup is earlier (~22:00) because the ascent takes longer. · Usually included in the transfer package.

The Besakih route is longer (±6–8 hours) to the highest summit of 3,142 masl; starts around midnight.

Stay Alert & Safety Tips

Be careful to avoid scammers. Information compiled from climber experiences & trusted sources.

  • reportScams Compare guide/package prices across providers as rates vary widely (Rp500,000 to Rp2,500,000) depending on group size, route, and transfer. Use official/registered guides to avoid touts charging unreasonable prices.
  • thunderstormWeather Bali's DKLH forbids climbing in extreme weather (heavy rain, storms). Monitor BMKG, follow ranger-post instructions, and descend immediately in thick fog, heavy rain, or strong wind.
  • thunderstormWeather Active volcano: PVMBG sets an Estimated Hazard Zone around the summit crater (dynamic radius). Always check the latest activity status on MAGMA Indonesia/PVMBG before climbing.
  • warningRoads Terrain at ±2,200–2,800 masl becomes open rock, loose gravel, and steep cliffs that sometimes require hand scrambling. The pre-dawn climb demands a quality headlamp and high alertness.
  • infoInfo Customary/sanctity taboos: do not bring/consume beef; avoid red/green clothing; do not curse, vandalize, or litter. Respect the climbing ban during ceremonies.
  • infoInfo Climbing is fully closed during religious ceremonies (e.g. piodalan/karya at Pura Pasar Agung Besakih) to preserve the area's sanctity. Confirm open/close schedules with your guide/temple committee before booking.
