Description

Mount Adatara (安達太良山, ~1,700–1,728 m) is an active volcano in Fukushima Prefecture, Tōhoku, and one of Japan's 100 Famous Mountains — immortalised by the poet Chieko Takamura as the home of the 'real sky'. The massif has several peaks, with its high point near Minowa-yama, while its nipple-shaped summit knob (nicknamed 'chichi-kubi') is a signature landmark. Thanks to the Adatara Express Ropeway, which lifts visitors to about 1,350 m, the mountain is very beginner-friendly: the main summit is a round trip of only a few hours over gentle paths and open moorland. Behind it lies the active Numano-taira explosion crater, steaming with sulphur, and the beloved hot-spring hut Kurogane-goya. Adatara is famous for its autumn foliage and sweeping views over Lake Inawashiro and the Bandai range.

Routes

Puncak → kawah Numano-taira → Kurogane-goya → Okudake (turun via onsen)

Sedang
±3–4 jam (bagian turun dari puncak)

A circuit descending the mountain's inner side: from the summit toward the rim of the active, sulphur-steaming Numano-taira explosion crater, then down to the Kurogane-goya hot-spring hut before returning to the Okudake trailhead. It shows Adatara's wilder volcanic side and offers a mountain onsen soak; caution is needed for volcanic gas and possible trail closures when the alert level rises.

Ropeway → Yakushidake → Puncak Adatara (jalur pemula)

Mudah
+350 m ±3–4 jam pulang-pergi dari stasiun atas ropeway

The most popular, beginner-friendly route. The Adatara Express Ropeway lifts hikers from the base to the Yakushidake station (~1,350 m); from there a gentle path over open moorland leads to the main Adatara summit (~1,700 m). With only about 350 m of net ascent it makes an easy few-hour round trip suited to families, with wide panoramas and, in autumn, the mountain's famous foliage.

Climbing Experiences

Hiker accounts of Adatara consistently describe it as one of the most beginner-friendly of Japan's 100 Famous Mountains: the Adatara Express Ropeway shortens the climb so the summit can be reached in a few hours. Vlogs highlight the gentle path from the Yakushidake station, open moorland, the sulphur-steaming Numano-taira explosion crater, and the Kurogane-goya hot-spring hut. Recurring themes are the beauty of the autumn foliage and the 'real sky' celebrated by the poet Chieko Takamura.
