Description
Gughe (also spelled Guge), about 4,207 m, is the highest peak of the Gamo Highlands in southern Ethiopia and is commonly cited as the country's third-highest mountain—formerly the high point of the old SNNPR region. It rises roughly 20 km northeast of the town of Arba Minch, standing above the Great Rift Valley escarpment and overlooking Lake Abaya. The massif lies at the heart of the Gamo people's homeland, so a climb of its slopes is often combined with visits to the Dorze weaving villages around Chencha, famous for their elephant-shaped bamboo houses and enset (false-banana) fields. The summit area is a moderately sloping terrain with waterfalls on the upper Toshike River and sweeping views over the twin Rift lakes of Abaya and Chamo. The ascent is non-technical but demanding because of altitude, unmarked paths, and remoteness.

Routes
Ascent Gughe via Arba Minch – Boyre (Deramalo)
Sedang–berat (scramble kelas 2, jalur tak bertanda)The main line to the ~4,207 m summit: drive by 4WD from Arba Minch toward Deramalo woreda / Boyre market to a high trailhead (about 3,000 m), then walk along an unmarked ridge to the top. It passes enset fields, forest, and waterfalls on the upper Toshike River, with views over Lakes Abaya and Chamo. A local guide is needed for navigation.
SourceTrek budaya-alam Gamo Highlands (via Dorze/Chencha)
Sedang (trek dataran tinggi, non-teknis)A community-based variant that loops around the Gughe massif via the Dorze weaving villages near Chencha—walking between settlements, wild-camping on the highlands, and following hidden waterfalls while mixing with the Gamo people. It nicely combines acclimatisation, culture, and Rift Valley views.
SourceClimbing Experiences
A Gughe ascent usually starts from Arba Minch or Deramalo woreda: a vehicle (4WD or motorbike) brings you to Boyre market or a high trailhead (~3,080 m), then it continues on foot along an unmarked ridge to the summit. This entry now also draws on Petter Bjørstad's detailed February 2025 trip report, which logs times, GPS coordinates, and the order of the local tops—though his GPS put the summit at ~3,568 m, differing from the Wikidata figure of 4,207 m used in the profile. Because the massif sits in the Gamo people's homeland, many trips are framed as culture-and-nature treks that combine the climb with visits to the Dorze/Chencha villages—elephant-shaped bamboo houses, traditional weaving, and enset fields—plus views of Lakes Abaya and Chamo. Hikers and travellers describe cold highland air, waterfalls on the upper rivers, forest and moorland on the slopes, and the need for a local guide because the path is faint.
