Information

Elevation
6.071 m
Country
Chili (CL)
Location / Range
Cordillera Occidental, altiplano Andes — Comuna Putre, Provinsi Parinacota, Región de Arica y Parinacota; berbatasan/berdampingan dengan Reserva Nacional Las Vicuñas & Parque Nacional Lauca
Mountain type
Volcanic?
Yes — volcano
Coordinates
-18.4236, -69.0897
Difficulty
Secara teknis mudah tetapi sangat menuntut fisik karena ketinggian ekstrem >6.000 m: pendakian acarreo (scree/pasir vulkanik) berkemiringan curam hingga ~50°, melewati sekitar 200 m dari fumarol aktif menuju puncak. Aklimatisasi menyeluruh wajib.
Best Season

Description

Guallatiri is an active stratovolcano about 6,060–6,071 m high on the altiplano of northern Chile's Andes, within the Putre commune of Parinacota Province (Arica y Parinacota Region), adjoining the Las Vicuñas National Reserve and Lauca National Park. It is known as one of the highest historically-active volcanoes in the world: its summit is ringed by numerous persistently steaming fumaroles, with sulphur deposits around its lava dome. For high-altitude climbers, Guallatiri is a challenge because of its altitude rather than any technical difficulty. The normal route sets out from Putre to the hamlet of Churiguaya at around 4,438 m — which has drinking water and hot springs — then a high camp before the summit push up a scree/volcanic-sand slope ("acarreo") of roughly 50 degrees, passing only about 200 metres from active fumaroles near the top. Thorough acclimatization is essential and the climb is best done in the altiplano summer (December–March). The summit panorama sweeps across the vast altiplano, salt lakes and neighbouring volcanoes such as the Nevados de Quimsachata and Parinacota.

Routes

hingga 4 hari (pulang-pergi termasuk perjalanan & aklimatisasi)

Access via Putre to the hamlet of Churiguaya (~4,438 m, with drinking water and hot springs), then a high camp and summit push up a scree/volcanic-sand "acarreo" of about 50°, passing only ~200 m from active fumaroles to the summit. Usually no permits or fees; best season December–March. It lies in a border zone near the Las Vicuñas National Reserve.

Climbing Experiences

Accounts of climbing Guallatiri centre on the normal route from Putre via the hamlet of Churiguaya up to the fumarolic summit above 6,000 m. Videos highlight the steep scree/volcanic-sand "acarreo", the vast altiplano with vicuñas, and active fumaroles steaming near the top — including archival footage of a historic expedition.
