Description
Gros Piton is the larger of the twin Pitons near Soufrière, Saint Lucia, a volcanic plug or lava dome that rises steeply from the Caribbean coast to 798 meters. Together with Petit Piton it forms part of the UNESCO-listed Pitons Management Area world heritage site. The standard hike begins at the village of Fond Gens Libre and requires a certified local guide; the round trip takes roughly 3–5 hours over thousands of steps, rocks, and roots on a very steep trail. The route is demanding because of tropical heat, high humidity, and rock that turns slippery when wet, so an early morning start is recommended. The best time to climb is the dry season from about December to May. In return for the hard effort, hikers are rewarded with sweeping views of Petit Piton, the Soufrière coastline, and the Caribbean Sea from the summit.
