Description

The Grivola (3,969 m) is an elegant pyramidal rock peak in the Gran Paradiso massif of the Graian Alps, in Italy's Aosta Valley, standing on the watershed between the Valsavarenche and the Cogne valley. Its slender, symmetrical silhouette has long fascinated alpinists and even features in classic mountain writing. It was first climbed in 1859 by John Ormsby and companions with local Aosta Valley guides. The Grivola is not a peak for casual hikers: its normal route is graded PD, combining a long approach over glacial terrain, a couloir, and exposed easy rock climbing to the summit. Its reputation as a 'deceptive' mountain comes partly from its poor, loose rock and rockfall risk, which demand care, an early start, and solid alpine technique. Ascents are usually based at the Rifugio Vittorio Sella in the Cogne valley or the Bivacco Gratton on the Valsavarenche side, on the edge of the Gran Paradiso National Park.

Routes

Via Normale dari Rifugio Vittorio Sella (sisi Cogne)

Alpine PD (Peu Difficile) — medan glasial/salju + panjat batu ringan terekspos; butuh crampon, kapak es, tali
±5–6 jam naik dari Rifugio Vittorio Sella (2.588 m); umumnya 2 hari termasuk menginap di pondok

The most common route. From the Cogne valley, climbers ascend to the Rifugio Vittorio Sella (2,588 m) to overnight, then set off before dawn across snow/glacial terrain and up an exposed rock section to the summit. Graded PD: not highly technical but demanding crampon, ice-axe and roped-movement skills, with real vigilance against loose rock and rockfall. Not for beginners without alpine experience or a guide.

Source

A variant from Valnontey (Cogne valley): the path climbs steeply through rocks toward the Colle Pousset (~3,198 m) and the Bivacco Gratton, then works up the south-east face via a couloir that is never technically hard but very slippery and exposed to rockfall. Some climb it in one long day. It demands a very early start, good snow conditions, and solid alpine technique.

Climbing Experiences

Climbing the Grivola is a PD alpine ascent in the Gran Paradiso massif, not an ordinary trek: a long approach over glacial terrain and a couloir, then exposed easy rock to the slender pyramidal summit. The clips below show real ascents of the normal route from the Cogne/Valnontey and Valsavarenche sides, while blog and mountaineering-site write-ups summarise the route, the difficulty, and the hazards of loose rock and rockfall.
