Description
Grauspitz — written Vorder Grauspitz or Grauspitze on some maps — is the highest mountain of Liechtenstein at 2,599 m, and the highest summit of the Rätikon range west of the Schesaplana massif. Its summit sits exactly on the Liechtenstein–Switzerland border (canton of Graubünden), dividing the Lawenatal valley to the north (municipality of Triesen, Liechtenstein) from the Fläscher Tal to the south (Fläsch, Switzerland); both flanks drain into the Rhine, which flows about 7 km to the west. Unlike the crowded national high-points elsewhere in Europe, Grauspitz is a rarely-climbed and genuinely demanding peak: there is no marked path to the top, and even the easiest line has to cross the neighbouring Hinter Grauspitz (2,574 m) and then follow a narrow class 3–4 razor ridge. Reaching it feels more like a light alpine tour than a walk-up trail, which makes it a target mainly for country high-point collectors and experienced Liechtenstein/Swiss mountaineers.

Routes
Rute Liechtenstein via Steg (Lawenatal / Alp Valüna)
T4 (jalur bypass scree) hingga T6 (punggungan langsung); menuntut navigasi GPS, langkah mantap, dan scrambling tereksposThe Liechtenstein approach starts from a parking area near Steg (Triesenberg, ~1,300 m), follows the valley past Alp Valüna, then an unmarked alpine trail from about 1,750 m over the Ijesfürggli boundary pass. From there it climbs Hinter Grauspitz (2,574 m) and finishes with a traverse to Vorder Grauspitz (2,599 m) — either the direct exposed ridge (rated T6) or a looser scree bypass (rated T4). The route is pathless, so GPS navigation is strongly recommended. Elevation gain is roughly 1,290 m from the Steg trailhead to the summit (approximate).
Route Segments
- 1
Steg (±1.300 m) → Alp Valüna
Jalan lembah / jalan kerikil hingga awal jalur alpine tak bertanda
- 2
Alp Valüna → Ijesfürggli (pass)
Jalur tak bertanda menyusuri sungai gunung menuju pass batas Liechtenstein–Swiss
- 3
Ijesfürggli → Hinter Grauspitz → Vorder Grauspitz
Naik Hinter Grauspitz (2.574 m) lalu traverse punggungan terekspos ke puncak; opsi punggungan langsung (T6) atau bypass scree (T4)
Rute Normal via Malans / Fläsch (sisi Swiss)
Alpine scramble T5–T6 / UIAA I–II (kelas 3–4) di punggunganThe Swiss-side approach starts at Malans (Graubünden), using the Älplibahn cable car, then climbs to a pass at ~2,050 m and Alp Ijes. From there it gains Hinter Grauspitz (2,574 m); the final stretch is an exposed, brittle summit ridge (or a steep unmarked scree bypass) to Vorder Grauspitz (2,599 m). About 9 km one-way with ~1,210 m of ascent.
Route Segments
- 1
Malans (Älplibahn) → Pass 2.050 m
Pendekatan via kereta gantung lalu naik ke pass batas
- 2
Pass → Alp Ijes → Hinter Grauspitz
Medan curam sebagian tanpa jalur menuju Hinter Grauspitz (2.574 m)
- 3
Hinter Grauspitz → Vorder Grauspitz
Traverse punggungan terekspos, batu rapuh UIAA I–II; ada opsi bypass scree lebih mudah (T4) vs punggungan langsung (T6)
Climbing Experiences
Climbing Grauspitz (Vorder Grauspitz), Liechtenstein's 2,599 m rooftop, is far more demanding than most European national high-points, which are usually tourist walk-ups. Nearly every trip report stresses three things: there is no marked path to the summit, the route must cross the neighbouring Hinter Grauspitz (2,574 m), and the final stretch is a narrow class 3–4 rock ridge (T5–T6) with drops on both sides. Common starting points are Steg/Lawenatal on the Liechtenstein side (via Alp Valüna and the Ijesfürggli pass) or Malans/Fläsch on the Swiss side (sometimes using a cable car). Because the terrain is so quiet, many call Grauspitz 'the loneliest of the Alpine seven summits' — a favourite challenge for experienced country high-point collectors rather than beginners.
