Description

Granite Peak (3,904 m) is Montana’s highest summit in the Beartooth Mountains within the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness. The eastern approach across Froze-to-Death Plateau combines cross-country travel with exposed scrambling and rock climbing; Ritter reports using belays and rappels. The southern approach from Lady of the Lake through Sky Top Lakes reaches the Southwest Ramp, which still has steep steps and rockfall hazards. Eckert distinguishes this ramp from the harder adjacent couloir, where he encountered hard ice. Differences in naming and snow conditions make historical accounts useful context rather than assurance of present route conditions or safety.

From the Mystic Lake trailhead, Ritter crossed Froze-to-Death Plateau to a high camp. Summit day involved a snow crossing and belayed rock climbing, followed by downclimbing and rappels. Four days describes this guided itinerary rather than a standard completion time.

The approach passes Lady of the Lake, the Broadwater crossing, Lone Elk Lake, Rough Lake and the Sky Top Lakes basin. The ramp above a large slab has two rock steps and finishes on an exposed ridge. Robbins noted fixed ropes and rockfall hazards; ropes present then do not establish current conditions. Describing this as a non-technical walk is misleading.
