Description
La Grande Casse (3,855 m) is the highest peak of the Vanoise massif in the Graian Alps and the culminating point of France's Savoie department. It rises in the heart of the Parc national de la Vanoise, France's first national park, above the village of Pralognan-la-Vanoise. Its normal route is a glaciated alpine climb via the Glacier des Grands Couloirs: climbers usually overnight at the Refuge du Col de la Vanoise (reached in about 2.5 hours from the Fontanettes car park past the Lac des Vaches), then on the second day cross the glacier and climb a snow/ice couloir of 40°–45° over roughly 300 m to the summit. The route requires crampons, an ice axe and glacier rope work. Thanks to its long snow cover, the Grande Casse is also a classic ski-mountaineering objective in late winter and early spring. The summit was first climbed in 1860 by William Mathews with guides, a milestone in French alpine history.

Routes
Couloir des Italiens (muka utara)
Alpine D — couloir salju/es curam, lebih teknis & terpapar daripada via normaleA north-face line via the Couloir des Italiens — a more challenging option than the normal route. This steep snow/ice couloir demands ice technique, snow-condition judgment, and experience on exposed terrain, but offers a more direct, quieter line to the 3,855 m summit.

SourceClimbing Experiences
Experiences on the Grande Casse split into two moods: a summer glaciated alpine climb by the normal route via the Glacier des Grands Couloirs, and classic ski-mountaineering through the Grands Couloirs in late winter/early spring. French climbers' videos show the overnight at the Refuge du Col de la Vanoise, crossing the crevassed glacier, climbing the 40°–45° snow couloir, and the Vanoise panoramas from the 3,855 m summit — the highest point of Savoie. Most footage is in French by local alpinists and skiers.
