Description

Gokyo Ri (5,357 m) is a rocky viewpoint peak rising on the western side of the Ngozumpa Glacier — the longest glacier in the Himalaya — above the turquoise Gokyo Lakes in Nepal's Khumbu region. Rather than a technical climb, Gokyo Ri is a popular acclimatisation hike that gains about 600 metres from Gokyo village (~4,750 m). Many trekkers set off at 4 a.m. and reach the top in 2.5–3 hours to arrive at sunrise, when the first light turns the giant peaks orange then gold (alpenglow). Its summit offers one of the world's most iconic panoramas: four 8,000-metre peaks — Everest, Lhotse, Makalu and Cho Oyu — in a single sweep, plus the Gokyo Lakes and the tongue of the Ngozumpa Glacier below. The Gokyo Valley is a quieter alternative to the classic Everest Base Camp trail and is often combined with the Cho La or Renjo La passes to form a Three Passes circuit. Because of the altitude, gradual acclimatisation from Namche Bazaar is critical to safety.

Routes

Rute Standar Lembah Gokyo — via Namche → Dole → Machhermo → Gokyo → tanjakan puncak sebelum fajar

The most common route follows the Gokyo Valley: from Lukla to Namche Bazaar (acclimatisation), then up to Dole and Machhermo, before reaching Gokyo village (~4,750 m) beside the third Gokyo Lake. The summit push starts pre-dawn (often 4 a.m.) up a rocky zig-zag on the western flank of the Ngozumpa Glacier, gaining about 600 metres in 2.5–3 hours to reach the top (5,357 m) at sunrise. From there Everest, Lhotse, Makalu and Cho Oyu are all visible, along with the Gokyo Lakes and the longest glacier tongue in the Himalaya. Gradual acclimatisation from Namche is essential, as fast ascent to this altitude risks AMS.

Variasi Renjo La — sirkuit Three Passes dari/ke Thame

Trekking berat: penyeberangan pas ~5.360 m, sebagian bersalju/berbatu sesuai musim
Menambah 1–2 hari pada trek Gokyo

An alternative to enter or exit the Gokyo Valley via the Renjo La pass (~5,360 m) from the Thame/Lumde side. It is quieter, offers Everest and Gokyo Lake views from a different angle, and is often combined with Gokyo Ri and the Cho La to form a Three Passes circuit. It demands solid acclimatisation and weather readiness, as the pass sits above 5,300 m.

Climbing Experiences

Gokyo Ri is one of the most-filmed viewpoints in the Himalaya. The footage below captures real experiences across operators and seasons — from pre-dawn climbs for the Everest alpenglow to Cho La/Renjo La crossings and full Gokyo–Everest Base Camp guides — while underscoring the need for careful acclimatisation above 5,300 m.
