Information

Elevation
1.895 m
Country
Polandia (PL)
Location / Range
Tatra Barat (Tatry Zachodnie), Taman Nasional Tatra, di atas kota Zakopane
Mountain type
Masif batu gamping/dolomit bergerigi di Tatra Barat dengan tiga puncak — Mały Giewont (1.728 m), Wielki Giewont (1.894–1.895 m), dan Długi Giewont (1.867 m); bukan gunung berapi
Volcanic?
No (non-volcanic)
Coordinates
49.2506, 19.9339
Difficulty
Menengah–berat.

Description

Giewont is an iconic massif in Poland's Western Tatras, rising directly above the resort town of Zakopane and standing as one of the country's national symbols. Its highest summit, Wielki Giewont (about 1,894–1,895 m), is crowned by a 15-metre steel cross erected in 1901, now both a pilgrimage site and a patriotic emblem. Seen from afar, the mountain's silhouette resembles a reclining knight — the source of a Polish legend of 'sleeping knights' said to awaken when the homeland is in danger. The climb is hugely popular: trails ascend through the forests and high meadows of Tatra National Park before finishing with a steep, chain-assisted section to the summit. That very popularity means the chained part is often crowded and prone to bottlenecks. The most serious hazard is lightning — in 2019 a strike on the summit cross and chains killed several hikers — so climbers are urged to descend early and avoid the summit in threatening weather.

Routes

Dari Dolina Małej Łąki via Grzybowiec

Berat — tanjakan menembus Grzybowiec, bagian akhir berantai
±6–7 jam pulang-pergi

An alternative route from Dolina Małej Łąki that climbs over the Grzybowiec ridge before joining the summit path. It is quieter and more demanding than the Kuźnice approach, still finishing on the chain-assisted section to the top of Giewont. A good choice for a tougher variant, while still watching the weather and summit crowds.

Dari Kuźnice via Przełęcz Kondracka

Menengah–berat — jalur panjang, bagian akhir berbantuan rantai besi
±5–7 jam pulang-pergi

The most common approach from Kuźnice near Zakopane. It climbs through the forests and high meadows of Tatra National Park to Przełęcz Kondracka, then up a steep, chain-assisted final section to the summit of Wielki Giewont and its steel cross. Crowded in peak season; an early descent is advised to avoid afternoon thunderstorms.

Climbing Experiences

Hikers' accounts of Giewont are strikingly consistent: a popular, scenic climb that ends with a chain-assisted final section up to the summit and its iconic steel cross. The videos — in both Polish and English — show approaches via Dolina Strążyska, Dolina Małej Łąki through Grzybowiec, and the Kuźnice trail, and stress the crowds at the chains and the sweeping views over Zakopane and the Tatras. Recurring themes: the panorama, bottlenecks at the narrowest point, and repeated warnings about lightning that make an early descent important.
