Description

Giant's Castle (iNtabayikhonjwa, ~3,315 m) is one of the iconic peaks on the Central Drakensberg escarpment in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. It sits within the Giant's Castle Game Reserve—one of the province's oldest protected areas—which shelters herds of eland and rare raptors, including a dedicated hide near World's View for watching the Bearded and Cape Vulture. Reaching the escarpment requires a long climb from Giants Castle Camp up Giant's Ridge and the contour path, then a steep ascent of Giant's Castle Pass (its top near 3,102 m), finishing with a sharp gully that involves light scrambling; most hikers go overnight. The reserve also holds the Main Caves with thousands-of-years-old San rock art and offers dozens of trails, from hour-long walks to multi-day circuits via mountain huts such as Bannerman Hut. Fast-changing weather, summer thunderstorms and mist make a map, navigation and good fitness essential.

A three-day circuit: climb onto the escarpment and overnight at Bannerman Hut, ascend Bannerman Pass, traverse the escarpment ridge to Langalibalele Pass (named after a Zulu leader), then descend roughly 5 hours back into the reserve.
