Information
- Elevation
- 2.948 m
- Country
- Tanzania (TZ)
- Location / Range
- Crater Highlands / Gregory Rift (Great Rift Valley), tepi tenggara Danau Natron, Distrik Longido, Wilayah Arusha
- Mountain type
- Gunung berapi perisai (shield volcano) di Dataran Tinggi Kawah, Great Rift Valley — vulkanik (erupsi terakhir era Pleistosen)
- Volcanic?
- Yes — volcano
- Coordinates
- -2.6192, 36.1003
- Difficulty
- Menengah (non-teknis) — lereng landai khas gunung perisai; kesulitan datang dari medan semak berduri dan risiko satwa liar, bukan pendakian teknis
- Best Season
Description
Gelai (Ol Doinyo Gelai) is a shield volcano rising to about 2,948 m in the Longido District of Tanzania's Arusha Region, within the Crater Highlands of the East African Rift. It sits at the southeastern edge of alkaline Lake Natron, famed for its lesser flamingo colonies, and is the third most prominent peak in the region (prominence ~1,925 m), qualifying as an 'Ultra'. Built by volcanism along the Gregory Rift, its activity is younger than one million years, with the last eruption in the Pleistocene. A July 2007 earthquake sequence fractured its southern flank, likely tied to a dike intrusion at roughly 4,000 m depth. The isolated summit holds the Gelai Forest Reserve, a dry montane forest that is an important water catchment, surrounded by several Maasai settlements. Because it lies in a game-controlled area with regulated hunting and anti-poaching efforts, wildlife such as buffalo, kudu, eland, bushbuck, giraffe and zebra is abundant on its slopes. As a shield volcano its ascent is gradual rather than technical, though thorn bush, stinging nettle and dangerous wildlife are real obstacles.

Routes
Rute Desa Gelai (sisi Maasai, berpemandu)
Menengah (non-teknis) — kemiringan landai khas gunung perisai; kesulitan terutama dari medan bervegetasi berduri dan risiko satwa liarThe established approach starts at the Maasai village of Gelai; a rough 4x4 track gains the initial height, then a gradual ~11 km round-trip hike (~700 m of gain) leads through bush and montane forest to the wooded summit — always with a local Maasai guide because of buffalo and other wildlife.
SourceClimbing Experiences
Gelai is rarely climbed and has almost no dedicated trip vlogs — video searches mostly surface the different Ol Doinyo Lengai volcano. The sources below are strictly Gelai-specific: one first-person summit trip report from the Maasai-village side, an operator/climbing-information page, and two mountain/volcanology databases documenting its elevation, prominence and geological context.
