Description

Geger Bentang (around 1,990–2,000 m) is a mountain ridge — in Sundanese 'geger' means ridge — within the Gede–Pangrango volcanic complex in Mount Gede Pangrango National Park, West Java. It is not a standalone summit but a high point forming the spine of one of the alternative hiking routes toward the summits of Gunung Gede and Pangrango (3,019 m). According to the PeakVisor database, Geger Bentang ranks as the 8th highest peak within Mount Gede Pangrango National Park and 59th across West Java. The 'via Gegerbentang' trail is well known among Indonesian hikers as a non-mainstream, extremely steep and exhausting route: climbers compare it to the notoriously relentless Arjuna trail with 'almost no flat ground', passing plantations and rivers before entering dense forest full of leeches and thorny rattan, then climbing a chain of ridges through Puncak Bayangan and the Alun-Alun Mandalawangi meadow to reach Puncak Pangrango. Because of its difficulty most hikers choose the main Cibodas or Gunung Putri routes, so Geger Bentang is mostly taken by those seeking an extra challenge. Like the whole national park, climbing here requires an online quota registration and is subject to an annual closure period.
