Description
Gamsberg (2,347 m) is Namibia's classic table mountain — a granite-and-quartzite plateau in the Hakos range of the Khomas Region, about 120–130 km south-west of Windhoek. Its shape is unmistakable: the summit is a flat plateau running roughly 2.5 km north–south and a few hundred metres wide, looking like a giant table sliced level. The name 'Gams' comes from the Khoekhoegowab (Khoisan) language, meaning 'closed off'. The mountain is reached via the Gamsberg Pass on the C26 road; its base is accessed by a narrow gravel track from the surrounding guest farms, followed by a short but steep climb onto the plateau rim. Because the air here is exceptionally dry, high and free of light pollution, the Gamsberg plateau was once chosen by the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy as a world-class Southern-Hemisphere observatory site; today the surrounding land is managed as private and astronomy guest farms (such as Hakos), so most summit visits are made on guided tours.

Routes
Jalur kendaraan + pendakian singkat ke plateau (via guest farm)
Sedang — jalur tanah 4x4 sangat curam dan sempit, lalu jalan setapak singkat; umumnya via tur berpemanduThe most common route: from the C26 road over the Gamsberg Pass, then onto a narrow gravel track from the guest-farm area towards the north-eastern foot of the Gamsberg. Most of the steep ascent is done by 4x4 on an unprotected track; from where the vehicle stops, a short but steep walk leads to the rim of the broad, flat summit plateau. Because the summit is on private/astronomy land, access is usually via a guided tour from the surrounding guest farms (the Hakos area).
SourceClimbing Experiences
A visit to the Gamsberg (2,347 m) is usually a 4x4 self-drive over the Gamsberg Pass on the C26 road, followed by a short but steep climb onto the summit plateau from the surrounding guest farms. Visitor accounts highlight the narrow, challenging gravel track to the base, the broad flat table-mountain plateau, and the exceptionally clear night skies — which have made this area a hub of amateur astronomy (the IAS/Hakos observatory, a Max Planck heritage). Because the summit sits on private land, access is largely via guided tours from nearby guest farms.
