Information
- Elevation
- 312 m
- Country
- Latvia (LV)
- Location / Range
- Dataran Tinggi Vidzeme (Vidzemes augstiene)
- Mountain type
- Volcanic?
- No (non-volcanic)
- Coordinates
- 56.8700, 25.9594
- Difficulty
- Sangat mudah.
Musim gugur (akhir September–Oktober) menawarkan warna dedaunan terbaik. Desember–Maret adalah musim ski: tiga trase berlampu di lereng utara-timur beroperasi bila salju cukup, sekaligus periode paling ramai. Jalur puncak sendiri terbuka sepanjang tahun tanpa penutupan musiman.
- Permits & Rules
- Hazards
- Risikonya kecil tetapi nyata.
Description
Gaiziņkalns (Latvian: Gaiziņš, German: Mesenberg) is the highest point of Latvia at 311.94 m above sea level, in the Vidzeme Upland, Bērzaune parish, Madona municipality, about a two-hour drive east of Riga. It is not an alpine mountain but a glacial moraine hill left by the Scandinavian ice sheet, rising only about 61 m above its surroundings; the roughly 1 km long, 650 m wide hill sits within a hill-and-lake landscape protected as Gaiziņkalns Nature Park (around 2,000 ha, established 1957, Natura 2000). Its summit holds the "Gaissa-kalns" station of the Struve Geodetic Arc, measured in 1824 and part of a UNESCO World Heritage site, along with a memorial stone for President Alberts Kviesis's 1930 visit and a Latvian flagpole. The hill is famous for its rivalry with Estonia: because Suur Munamägi (318 m) is higher, Latvians repeatedly tried to "add height" to Gaiziņkalns. A 31 m wooden tower stood here from 1930, and in 1982 work began on a brick tower planned at 51 m (cut to 41 m) that was never finished — funding ran out and the foundations were faulty. After decades as Latvia's best-known dangerous ruin, the tower was blown up on 14 December 2012 and the rubble cleared. Visitors today find a small viewing structure, multilingual information boards, and panoramas over forest and lakes. Access is easy: a 10–15 minute walk from the car park, or a marked 2 km circular nature trail (about 50 minutes) crossing the summit and the foot of the hill, free of charge. On the northern slope runs one of Latvia's main ski areas with three floodlit runs — Golgāta, Mazā Golgāta/Pirtnieks and Kamielis — plus the "Gaiziņš" recreation complex with a café, sauna, accommodation and tent sites.

Routes
Gaiziņkalna apskates taka (jalur alam melingkar 2 km)
Mudah (viegla–vidēja)The main and most recommended route on Gaiziņkalns: a 2 km circular nature trail starting at the foot of the hill, crossing Latvia's highest summit and descending back along the track around the base, taking roughly 50 minutes at an easy pace. It is waymarked with direction signs at junctions, and on the northern side a flight of steps (its base tucked behind the café) shortens the steepest section. Along the way there are two rest areas, small interpretive boards explaining the landscape features in view, and a shelter near the top. Viewpoints open onto four named slopes: Dāmu paradīze, the western slope, Mazā Golgāta and Golgāta. The route also passes the K. Ulmanis Spring, laid out in 1938, and several cultural heritage sites, while an information board with maps of the surrounding area stands at the trailhead. There is no entry fee, the trail is walkable year-round and suits families; grippy footwear is advisable when wet or frozen.

Sangat mudahThe fastest option for visitors who simply want to stand on Latvia's highest point. From the car park at the foot of the hill — the trailhead is clearly signposted — a gently rising path leads through the forest edge and one of the open former ski corridors, gaining about 60 m. Hikers who logged this route report a 10 to 15 minute ascent; some reached the top in about five minutes at a brisk pace, with a round trip under half an hour. At the summit stand a small viewing structure that cannot be climbed — a symbolic replacement for the concrete tower demolished in 2012 — a Latvian flagpole, a memorial stone and multilingual information boards, with the top station of the ski chairlift nearby. Note that trees ring the summit, so the best views are actually a few dozen metres lower on the open slope. Do not cross the ski runs while the lift is operating in winter. Free, no permit required, and possible year-round.

Pārgājiens "Gaiziņa pakāje – Abrienas kalns – Viešūrs"
SedangA 7 km circular route through the rolling landscape inside Gaiziņkalns Nature Park, for visitors who want more than a quick summit touch. It starts at the "Gaiziņš" recreation complex in Kalna Gaiziņi, Bērzaune parish, which offers a café, accommodation and winter equipment rental. The first sections follow the marked nature trail across the summit of Gaiziņkalns with its viewpoints, then 450 m of gravel road. Next come 1.7 km along road V881 past the abandoned Smilteņi School, 2.2 km on road V883 with views towards the Abrienas hills, 1.5 km of scenic road overlooking Lake Viešūrs, and a final 800 m back to the start. Important: the route is not waymarked as a whole — only direction signs at some junctions — and most of it runs along gravel road verges rather than footpaths, so wear bright clothing and watch for traffic. An optional 1.5 km extension via the Gaiziņa trail crosses the full length of the summit ridge.

Climbing Experiences
Visiting Gaiziņkalns is almost never about physical difficulty — nearly every account describes a 10 to 15 minute walk from the car park to the top, or the 2 km circular nature trail done in about 50 minutes. What makes the visit memorable is the context: this is the highest point of a whole country at just 311.94 m, ringed by the forests and lakes of the Vidzeme Upland, complete with ski runs and a chairlift that feel improbable on a hill this small. Country highpointers often combine it with Suur Munamägi in Estonia and Aukštojas in Lithuania, sometimes bagging four Baltic and Belarusian highpoints in under a day. Reports differ by era: visitors before 2012 still found the unfinished concrete tower or the pile of bricks left from it, while recent visitors describe a small viewing structure you cannot climb, a Latvian flag, multilingual information boards, and the top of a chairlift nearby. Other recurring themes: signage exists but driving to the trailhead can be confusing, petrol stations are scarce in this farmland region, and the best views come from the open former ski slopes rather than the tree-screened summit itself.
