Description

Fagradalsfjall is a 385 m tuya volcano on Iceland’s Reykjanes Peninsula, with Langhóll as its highest point. The name also describes the surrounding volcanic system. Eruptions in 2021–2023 created lava fields at Geldingadalir, Meradalir and near Litli-Hrútur. Visitor trails to lava viewpoints are distinct from an ascent of Langhóll. Historical eruption footage does not establish active lava or open access for a later visit. Plan using the authorities’ latest access, gas and weather information, and never step onto lava even when the surface looks solid.

Jalur A (Stórhóll) menuju Geldingadalir

2–2,5 jam sekali jalan / 2–2.5 hours one way

Path A reaches the 2021–2022 eruption area: approximately 6–8 km one way, depending on parking and turnaround point. This is not a return distance. Follow official access updates.

Approximately 4 km one way to the Langihryggur viewpoint (8 km return). It overlooks the 2021–2023 lava fields; Litli-Hrútur lava is visible, but its crater is not. Stay on marked trails.

Jalur E — Meradalir / Litli-Hrútur

Panjang dan menantang / Long and challenging

5–6 jam pulang-pergi, di luar berhenti / 5–6 hours return, excluding stops

An area trail to the July 2023 eruption site near Litli-Hrútur, approximately 18–20 km return. Gravel gives way to moss-covered lava rocks near the end. This is not a Fagradalsfjall summit route. Check access and never step onto fresh lava fields.
