Description

Emlembe (~1,862 m) is the highest point of Eswatini (Swaziland), standing on the ridge of the Makhonjwa Mountains—the northern Drakensberg—right on the border with South Africa's Mpumalanga Province. The Makhonjwa range is among the oldest rock formations on Earth, so Emlembe is often described as an ancient mountain. The most common trailhead is Bulembu, a former asbestos mining town in the Hhohho region, and the climb is usually arranged with a guide through Bulembu Country Lodge, whose proceeds support local community programmes. The route is moderate: drive up as far as possible, then walk along dirt roads and footpaths through grazing land and forest to the summit ridge, where a barbed-wire fence marks the Eswatini–South Africa border. There is no technical scrambling; the main challenge is mist that can close in over the upper ridge.
