Description

The Ellmauer Halt (2,344 m) is the highest peak of the Wilder Kaiser massif, part of the Kaiser Mountains (Kaisergebirge) in Tyrol, Austria — the jagged limestone wall that is an icon of Alpine climbing. The summit was first reached on 29 June 1869 by K. Hoffmann and J. Schlechter, and a summit cross was installed in 1883. The normal route is the Gamsängersteig, a medium-difficulty via ferrata (klettersteig) that is generally well secured and takes about 2.5 hours from the Gruttenhütte (1,620 m). It demands sure-footedness, a head for heights and some climbing agility, with a risk of rockfall when busy, so a helmet and via ferrata set are strongly advised. A more demanding alternative is the Kaiserschützensteig, a roughly 4-hour route crossing three summits from the Kaisertal side. The usual starting point is the Wochenbrunner Alm above Ellmau. From the top there are panoramas of the Wilder Kaiser walls, the Ellmau valley and the Kitzbühel Alps.

Routes

Gamsängersteig via Gruttenhütte (via ferrata normal)

Klettersteig tingkat sedang — terpasang kawat dengan baik namun terpapar; wajib set via ferrata dan helm
1 hari (±2,5 jam dari Gruttenhütte ke puncak)

The normal route to the summit: from the Wochenbrunner Alm to the Gruttenhütte (1,620 m), then the Gamsängersteig via ferrata for about 2.5 hours through cable-secured, exposed terrain to the 2,344 m summit. It needs sure-footedness, a head for heights and climbing agility; rockfall risk when busy makes a helmet strongly advisable.

Kaiserschützensteig (dari Kaisertal, lintas tiga puncak)

Klettersteig lebih menuntut — jalur panjang melintasi tiga puncak, sangat terpapar
1 hari panjang (±4 jam bagian klettersteig)

A more demanding alternative from the Kaisertal side (from the Anton-Karg-Haus or Hans-Berger-Haus), following the Kaiserschützensteig for about 4 hours across three summits with dramatic views. Longer and more exposed than the Gamsängersteig; for experienced via ferrata climbers.

Climbing Experiences

Accounts of climbing the Ellmauer Halt (2,344 m), the highest peak of the Wilder Kaiser, almost always feature the Gamsängersteig — a medium via ferrata from the Gruttenhütte above the Wochenbrunner Alm. Videos highlight the distinctive jagged limestone walls, the exposed cable-secured sections, the mountain huts and the Kaisergebirge panorama from the top. Some include official Wilder Kaiser regional coverage and winter-ascent stories.
