Description
El Misti (5,822 m) is a symmetrical andesitic stratovolcano and the emblem of Arequipa, Peru's second-largest city, which sits only about 17 km from its crater. Because nearly a million people and critical infrastructure (dams, hydroelectric plants, an airport) lie on its flanks, El Misti is regarded as the highest-risk volcano in Peru; its crater still emits fumaroles and its last minor eruption was recorded in 1985. For climbers it is one of the most popular 5,000 m peaks in South America precisely because the normal route is non-technical—no crampons or ropes—though still strenuous due to the altitude and sandy scree slopes. The standard ascent takes two days: an overnight camp near 4,600 m followed by a pre-dawn summit push to the twin summit craters, with sweeping views over Arequipa and the neighbouring Chachani and Pichu Pichu volcanoes.

Routes
Rute Normal via Monte Blanco (Aguada Blanca)
Rute Pastores / jalur cepat satu hari
Climbing Experiences
El Misti (5,822 m) is a non-technical stratovolcano above Arequipa that can be reached without crampons — making it one of the most popular 5,000 m peaks in South America. The standard ascent spans 2 days: an overnight camp near 4,600 m then a pre-dawn summit push through scree and volcanic ash. Climbers highlight the grueling sandy slope, thin air at altitude, the fumarole-emitting summit crater, and panoramic views of Arequipa below. The clips below cover guided and unguided ascents, including a Spanish-language trip report.
