Description
El Altar (5,319 m), called Kapak Urku ("sublime mountain") in Kichwa, is the remnant of an extinct stratovolcano whose collapsed caldera forms a spectacular horseshoe amphitheatre. More than nine jagged peaks—the highest known as El Obispo—ring the Laguna Amarilla, a greenish glacial lake at about 4,200 m that is the goal of an iconic trek inside Sangay National Park near Riobamba. The hike to the lagoon is often ranked among Ecuador's hardest: a long, muddy trail through páramo and cloud forest with fast-changing weather. Climbing the summits themselves is technical and rarely attempted, so for most visitors the true reward is the wall of cliffs and glaciers enclosing the Laguna Amarilla.

Dari sekitar Candelaria (Penipe), jalur menembus páramo dan lembah berlumpur panjang sebelum menanjak ke danau glasial di ketinggian ~4.200 m yang dikelilingi dinding tebing dan glasier El Altar. Kerap disebut salah satu trek tersulit di Ekuador karena jalur becek dan cuaca berkabut; umumnya bermalam berkemah agar bisa mencapai laguna keesokan paginya.
