Information
- Elevation
- 1.295 m
- Country
- Tunisia (TN)
- Location / Range
- Dorsale tunisienne (Dorsal Tunisia), Kegubernuran Zaghouan
- Mountain type
- Volcanic?
- No (non-volcanic)
- Coordinates
- 36.3500, 10.1167
- Difficulty
- Menengah hingga menantang meski relatif rendah.
Description
Djebel Zaghouan is the highest point in eastern Tunisia at 1,295 m, rising abruptly some 50 km south of Tunis above the town of Zaghouan on its northern slope. This limestone massif stretches roughly 9 km by 3 km at the north-eastern end of the Tunisian Dorsal, and its main summit is called Ras el Gassâa. Its appeal is not only height: at 289 m stands the Temple des Eaux, a 2nd-century Roman nymphaeum that captured the mountain's springs and — together with nearby Aïn Ayed — formed the head of the Zaghouan aqueduct that carried water to Carthage from AD 131, more than 100 km away. The area has been a national park since 2010. Its vegetation preserves remnants of northern Tunisia's ancient oleaster and carob forest, now dominated by Aleppo pine and holm oak, while its fauna ranges from wild boar to golden eagle and the rare alpine accentor. For walkers, the climb to Ras el Gassâa is famously far harder than the figure of 1,295 m suggests — long, steep, hot and exposed — and in recent years its cliffs have been developed for rock climbing.

Routes
Grand Pic (Ras el Gassâa) via Sidi Bou Gabrine
Sangat sulit — non-teknis tetapi turunannya berbahaya dan licinStarts at the Sidi Bou Gabrine mausoleum at about 700 m, some 80 km — a little over an hour — from Tunis. The line drops two kilometres on tarmac, turns onto a small trail past old mining ruins, passes a pond that can dry up in summer, then crosses rocky ground with views of an abandoned cable-car system before climbing steep rockfields to the col between the two peaks. The route notes stress a descent that is decidedly hazardous and slippery, demanding full concentration, and mention an equipment ramp that has unfortunately disappeared. Groups are capped at six experienced hikers; solid boots are essential and wind protection at the summit is strongly advised.

Sulit — tanjakan curam dan berbatu, turunan lebih ringanThe alternative from Sidi Medien village at about 450 m, reached by turning towards Moghrane three kilometres before the town of Zaghouan, some 80 km from Tunis. It climbs through former mining sites and their leftover infrastructure including a cable car, then scrambles to a summit that is really two tops separated by a col. The descent is friendlier, on a marked stone path through fig groves and meadows. At 800 m of gain it climbs more than the Sidi Bou Gabrine line, and groups are capped at ten experienced hikers.

4a–8a (padat di 5c, 6a–6c, 7a–7c) — sport, sebagian multi-pitchZaghouan's other side: a limestone sport-climbing area with roughly 25–50 routes graded 4a to 8a. The cliff base sits at 500 m with walls reaching 150 m, vertical to slightly overhanging and full of concretions and colonnettes. The approach is 10–20 minutes uphill and the crag is listed as usable all twelve months. Because many lines are long, multi-pitch skills — movement, belaying and retreat — are needed.
SourceClimbing Experiences
Zaghouan is documented from several complementary angles. What comes up most often is how much harder it is than expected: several walkers rank it among the toughest hikes they have done, far beyond what the figure of 1,295 m suggests. The sources below cover ascent vlogs to the Grand Pic (Ras el Gassâa) with summit panoramas, drone footage, the Zaghouan section of the Trans Tunisia trail, detailed route write-ups from two different sides (Sidi Bou Gabrine and Sidi Medien) with their hazards, a 30 km club hike report, and two references on the massif's rock-climbing development.
