Description

Diana's Peak (818 m) is the highest point of Saint Helena, a British overseas territory in the middle of the South Atlantic and one of the most remote inhabited islands on Earth. It is not a standalone summit but part of a three-peak ridge known collectively as 'The Peaks': Mount Actaeon (814 m), Diana's Peak, and Cuckold's Point (815 m), the two lower summits marked by large Norfolk pines that once served as navigational landmarks. Saint Helena itself is the eroded remnant of a long-extinct shield volcano, and this central ridge is what survives of it. The 81-hectare area around the peaks was designated Diana's Peak National Park in March 1996 — the island's first national park. Its main value is an almost unique cloud-forest ecosystem: mist-fed woodland dominated by endemic tree ferns, black cabbage tree, he cabbage, and whitewood. The ridge also holds hundreds of invertebrate species, 217 of which occur nowhere else on the planet. Its biggest threat is New Zealand flax, introduced in the 19th century, which forms thick blankets that smother native growth; habitat restoration is gradually reopening zones for endemic tree ferns. The walk itself is modest — 2–3 hours along a stepped path from Cabbage Tree Road — and on a clear day offers 360° views across the whole island, from Sandy Bay to Prosperous Bay.

Routes

Stitch's Ridge → Mount Actaeon → Diana's Peak → Cuckold's Point (Diana's Peak Post Box Walk)

Mudah–Sedang — jalur jelas, bertangga, dan terawat; kesulitan utamanya adalah permukaan yang licin dan becek setelah hujan, terutama saat turun
2–3 jam pulang-pergi untuk rangkaian tiga puncak

The standard route to Saint Helena's highest point starts from the parking lay-by on Stitch's Ridge, on the road toward Sandy Bay that leads off the 'W' road. From the car park, walk back a short way until you find the marked trailhead on Cabbage Tree Road — a grass track that climbs steadily. The lower section is dominated by flax (New Zealand flax), a 19th-century introduction that forms thick blankets and smothers native growth; between the stands you can see cleared habitat-restoration plots replanted with endemic tree ferns. Once on the ridge, the path becomes a stepped trail linking the three peaks. The first summit reached is Mount Actaeon (814 m), topped by a large Norfolk pine. From there the path dips slightly before climbing back up to Diana's Peak (818 m) — the island's high point, where a post box stands for recording your visit. The ridge continues on to Cuckold's Point (815 m). Along the ridge you walk through cloud forest: tree ferns, black cabbage tree, he cabbage, and whitewood, all endemic, with thick moss cloaking the trunks. On a clear day the panorama spreads 360° across the whole island, from Sandy Bay in the south to Prosperous Bay; but mist often rolls in suddenly, turning the ridge into a silent, prehistoric landscape.

Route Segments

  1. 1

Lay-by Stitch's Ridge → Awal jalur Cabbage Tree Road

    ⏱ Beberapa menit berjalan

Parkir di lay-by di jalan menuju Sandy Bay; berjalan sedikit kembali ke arah datang — papan penanda awal jalur terlihat jelas

  2. 2

Cabbage Tree Road → Punggungan (zona flax & petak restorasi)

    ⏱ ±30–45 menit

Jalur rumput menanjak melewati rumpun flax invasif; terlihat petak-petak restorasi habitat yang sudah dibersihkan

  3. 3

    Punggungan → Mount Actaeon (814 m)

    814 mdpl

Puncak pertama, ditandai pohon Norfolk pine besar; jalur bertangga menembus pakis pohon

  4. 4

    Mount Actaeon → Diana's Peak (818 m)

    818 mdpl

Jalur menurun sedikit lalu menanjak kembali ke titik tertinggi Saint Helena; ada post box di puncak

  5. 5

    Diana's Peak → Cuckold's Point (815 m) → turun

    815 mdpl

Puncak ketiga di punggungan; turunan paling licin dan becek — perlu hati-hati, terutama setelah hujan

Climbing Experiences

Climbing Diana's Peak is not about fitness — the walk takes 2–3 hours and even a small child has completed it. The appeal is what you walk through: a narrow ridge linking three summits (Mount Actaeon, Diana's Peak, Cuckold's Point) through a cloud forest found nowhere else, full of giant tree ferns and endemic black cabbage trees, with thick moss draping the branches. Almost every hiker tells the same story: the weather turns fast — one moment the panorama opens across Sandy Bay and Prosperous Bay, the next mist rolls in and the ridge becomes a silent, prehistoric landscape. The descent is the awkward part, boggy and slippery. At the summit sits a post box, part of Saint Helena's 'Post Box Walks' tradition, where walkers record their visit.
