Description
Deleng Takur-takur (1,524 m) is a peak within Gunung Leuser National Park (TNGL) in Deli Serdang Regency, North Sumatra — part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site 'Tropical Rainforest Heritage of Sumatra.' The name 'deleng' comes from the Batak language for mountain. The park is one of Southeast Asia's most critical biodiversity hotspots, sheltering critically endangered species including the Sumatran orangutan (Pongo abelii), Sumatran tiger, Sumatran elephant, Sumatran rhinoceros, and siamang, as well as more than 10,000 plant species including the giant Rafflesia arnoldii. Trails through the dense, unmarked tropical rainforest make experienced local guides essential; guides are generally arranged through the TNGL park authority.
