Description
Dedza Mountain (2,198 m) is a forested granite peak rising directly above Dedza town in central Malawi, and it is the highest point of the country's Central Region. It sits within the Dedza Mountain (Dedza–Salima) Forest Reserve — established in 1926 — near the M1 road linking Lilongwe and Blantyre. Much of its slopes are now covered in introduced pine plantations, but remnant patches of native montane evergreen forest and epiphytic orchids survive near the summit. It is a popular day hike, most often arranged through Dedza Pottery and Lodge: the route follows a dirt road for about 12 km with roughly 600 m of gain from Dedza town (Malawi's highest town, about 1,600 m), passing a first antenna-topped summit before reaching the true summit marked by a concrete trig pillar. On a clear day the top gives a 360-degree panorama over Lake Malawi, the mountains of Mozambique, and the Zomba Plateau and Mount Mulanje to the south. As a basement-rock granite peak it is non-volcanic.

Routes
Jalur puncak dari kota Dedza / Dedza Pottery
Sedang (panjang namun tak terlalu curam; bagian akhir lebih berbatu)The standard route starts in Dedza town or at the Dedza Pottery and Lodge (~1,590–1,600 m), Malawi's highest town, right off the M1 between Lilongwe and Blantyre. It follows a dirt road (drivable by high-clearance 4x4 to near the top) for about 12 km with ~600 m of gain through pine plantations dotted with wildflowers; not very steep but long, 5–7 hours round trip. A first summit topped with radio masts gives early Lake Malawi views; the true 2,198 m summit lies about 3 km further along a ridge over rockier terrain, marked by a concrete trig pillar. A local guide is standard (via Dedza Pottery Lodge). Bring water and lunch.
SourcePendakian singkat Dedza Pottery (setengah hari)
Ringan–sedang (opsi lebih pendek, tidak sampai puncak sejati)A more relaxed option offered by Dedza Pottery and Lodge for those short on time: a guided 1–4 hour walk on the lower and middle slopes through pine forest, without pushing over the rockier section to the true summit. Good for families or a light acclimatisation outing; guides carry raincoats and a first-aid kit because the mountain weather changes quickly.
