Yes — volcano
Coordinates
-0.6806, -78.4378
Difficulty
Moderate–strenuous (Alpine PD grade; glacier climbing with crampons and ice axe, rope not always required; non-technical but requires acclimatization above 5,000 m; volcanic activity status is monitored)
Best Season
June–September and December–February (Ecuador's dry season; avoid the rainy February–May and October–November)
Permits & Rules
Parque Nacional Cotopaxi entrance ticket (~$10 USD for non-residents, ~$2 USD for Ecuadorian residents) paid at the park entrance; climbing permit from the Ministerio del Ambiente (available in Latacunga or at the park ranger station); an ASEGUIM guide is strongly recommended; visitors must keep their receipts
Hazards
Active volcanic activity (eruptions/pyroclastic flows, SO₂ gas)—the summit was closed October 2022–March 2024 due to an eruption; crevasses on the shrinking glacier; altitude sickness above 5,000 m; very cold temperatures at night; ice/snow conditions vary by season

Description

Cotopaxi (5,897 m) is one of the world's highest active stratovolcanoes and Ecuador's most iconic summit, rising symmetrically from the Andes plateau within Cotopaxi National Park. Its glaciated cone is visible from Quito on clear days. The standard ascent departs at midnight from Refugio José Rivas (4,864 m), ascending the northern glacier with crampons and ice axe to the active crater rim — a non-technical route taking 6–8 hours to summit. After a closure due to volcanic activity (October 2022–March 2024), the peak reopened for climbing. Solid acclimatisation at 3,500–4,500 m for at least two nights before summit day is strongly advised. Volcanic status is monitored by Ecuador's Geophysical Institute (IG-EPN) and must be checked before any attempt.

Routes

Ruta Yanasacha — Sisi Barat (Teknis, Jarang Dilakukan)

Sangat berat (D; es & batuan teknis)
+1500 m 2–3 hari

A technical line via the western flank involving basalt rock and steep glacier near the Yanasacha wall. Extremely rarely attempted and requires advanced ice/rock climbing skills, full technical equipment, and an experienced guide. Not suitable for recreational climbers; this is an alpinist objective for specialist expeditions only.

Rute Normal — Sisi Utara (via Refugio José Rivas)

Sedang–Berat (PD)
+1033 m 1–2 hari (summit attack ~6–8 jam dari refugio, turun ~2–3 jam)

The standard route attempted by nearly 99% of climbers: overnight at Refugio José Rivas (4,864 m), midnight departure, north-face glacier ascent with crampons and ice axe, past crevasses and seracs to the active crater rim. Summit push 6–8 hours; descent 2–3 hours. Non-technical in normal conditions but requires solid acclimatisation and current volcanic status check from IG-EPN.

Climbing Experiences

Cotopaxi (5,897 m), Ecuador's iconic glaciated active volcano — a pre-dawn summit push from the refuge, demanding acclimatization but not highly technical. Climbers highlight the glacier, active crater, and summit sunrise.
