Description
Corps de Garde (720 m) — French for 'guardhouse' — is a mountain of volcanic origin rising above the towns of Quatre Bornes and Beau Bassin-Rose Hill in central Mauritius. Its basaltic rock formation has a striking appearance, with the slope breaking abruptly toward the sea; its silhouette is often likened to a reclining guard wearing a beret. The name comes from a French colonial-era military post once set on its slopes to watch for and intercept bands of runaway slaves (maroons) who hid in the mountains during the 18th century. Its flanks now shelter a nature reserve of about 90 hectares protecting rare endemic plants such as Trochetia parviflora (rediscovered in 2001) and the Mandrinette. The climb is a local favourite: it usually starts from the Camp Levieux estate on the Stanley side, on a well-worn but steep-near-the-top trail with almost no shade, opening to wide views over the Plaines Wilhems plateau and the west coast.
Routes
Jalur utama dari Camp Levieux (sisi Stanley)
Sedang–menantang; jejak jelas dengan bagian curam & sedikit scramble menjelang puncakThe most common route up Corps de Garde, starting from the Camp Levieux estate on the Stanley side. The path is well worn but climbs steadily and becomes steep and slightly rocky near the top, with almost no shade the whole way. Sources stress carrying plenty of water and starting at dawn because of full sun exposure and strong ridge winds. From the summit there is a wide panorama over Quatre Bornes, the Plaines Wilhems plateau, and the west coast of Mauritius.
SourceClimbing Experiences
Corps de Garde (720 m) is one of central Mauritius' favourite day hikes, usually 3–5 hours round trip. The popular trailhead is the Camp Levieux estate (Stanley side); the path is clear but climbs steeply near the top with almost no shade. Vlogs and guides repeatedly stress three things: carry plenty of water, start early because of heat and lack of cover, and be ready for strong summit winds. The reward is a wide panorama over Quatre Bornes, the Plaines Wilhems plateau, and the west coast.
