Description
Cofre de Perote (4,282 m), called Nauhcampatépetl or 'four-sided mountain' in Nahuatl, is one of Mexico's highest peaks and stands at the eastern end of the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt in the State of Veracruz. Its summit block resembling a stone chest (cofre) gives this dormant volcano its name. The area is protected as Cofre de Perote National Park. The main route usually begins at the village of El Conejo and runs about 12 km through dense pine forest to the rocky summit, with more challenging alternatives such as the 'Espinazo del Diablo'. Although technically less difficult than Mexico's high glaciated peaks, the altitude above 4,000 m, fog, freezing temperatures and strong winds still demand acclimatisation and an early start. The summit opens onto sweeping views of the Veracruz highlands and, on a clear day, Pico de Orizaba.

Routes
Espinazo del Diablo
Berat (scrambling, paparan)A more intense and challenging alternative to the summit of Cofre de Perote, crossing the rocky 'Espinazo del Diablo' (Devil's Spine) ridge with more scrambling and exposure. For hikers seeking more of a challenge than the El Conejo route.
SourceRuta El Conejo (jalur utama)
Sedang–berat (ketinggian tinggi)The main route, starting from the village of El Conejo and covering about 12 km through dense pine forest to the summit rock block (~4,282 m). Not very technical, but the altitude, fog and freezing summit temperatures demand acclimatisation and an early start.

Climbing Cofre de Perote / Nauhcampatépetl (4,282 m) in Veracruz is usually a high-altitude day hike via the main route from the village of El Conejo (~12 km) to the summit rock block, or via more challenging alternatives such as the 'Espinazo del Diablo'. Trip reports stress the dense pine forest lower down, the altitude above 4,000 m that demands acclimatisation, fog and freezing temperatures at the top, and some rock scrambling near the summit. The videos below capture various ascent routes and the panoramas of the Veracruz highlands.
