Description

The Chyulu Hills are a young volcanic field in Makueni County, southeastern Kenya — a roughly 100 km chain of rolling green hills trending northwest–southeast, studded with dozens of scoria cones and relatively recent lava flows. Its highest point reaches 2,188 m. Unlike most Kenyan parks, Chyulu is one of the rare places where you can walk for hours without meeting a safari vehicle. Part of the Tsavo Conservation Area, it holds the Leviathan (Kisula) Cave, an ~11 km lava tube that is one of Africa's longest. On clear days the ridgeline offers panoramas of snow-capped Kilimanjaro to the south (about 70 km away) and the Amboseli plains below. The Chyulu Hills famously stood in for the Ngong Hills in the film Out of Africa.

Routes

Hiking sehari + Gua Kisula/Leviathan (dari gerbang KWS Kibwezi)

Mudah–menengah; tanjakan berdebu & kerikil lepas, non-teknis
1 hari penuh (perjalanan panjang dari Nairobi ~232 km; hiking inti 3–5 jam)

The most popular Chyulu Hills route, combining lava-tube caving with ridge hiking. From the park gate at Kibwezi, vehicles cover ~16–18 km to the Kisula/Leviathan Cave; visitors explore the upper cave (~2 km of an ~11 km system) by headlamp. From there a trail climbs to the 'Satellite' point (~1,900 m, a former training base) and along the hills to the 2,188 m high point. On clear days Kilimanjaro is visible ~70 km to the south. Eland, giraffe, zebra, and baboons may be seen.

Route Segments

  1. 1

Gerbang KWS Kibwezi → Area Gua Kisula

Berkendara ~16–18 km melintasi ladang lava; titik awal eksplorasi gua

  2. 2

Gua Leviathan/Kisula (bagian atas ~2 km)

Lorong gelap total, butuh headlamp; bagian dari tabung lava ±11 km

  3. 3

    Titik 'Satellite' → Punggungan tertinggi

    2.188 mdpl

Naik dari ~1.900 m ke titik tertinggi 2.188 m; panorama Kilimanjaro & dataran Amboseli

Trek punggungan Chyulu (beberapa hari, didukung kendaraan)

Menengah; jalur satwa tanpa jalur baku, navigasi terbuka
2–3 hari (jalan kaki 4–5 jam per hari; berkemah liar)

A longer option traversing the quiet Chyulu ridge. Walking follows wildlife trails with no set paths for about 4–5 hours a day, with vehicle-supported wild camping. The main appeal is the solitude — hours of walking without meeting a safari vehicle — amid volcanic cones, forest, and views of Kilimanjaro and Amboseli. Access is through Chyulu Hills National Park (KWS) with guided arrangements.

Climbing Experiences

Experiences in the Chyulu Hills mix volcanic-hill hiking with lava-tube caving. A popular day route runs from the KWS gate at Kibwezi to the Kisula/Leviathan Cave and up to a viewpoint at roughly 1,900–2,188 m, with Kilimanjaro panoramas on clear days. Many visitors also camp 'above the clouds' on the ridge, or take a vehicle-supported multi-day ridge trek — the main draw being the ability to walk for hours in open country without safari crowds.
