Description

The Chyulu Hills form a hill range and volcanic field in southeastern Kenya, between the Amboseli and Tsavo ecosystems. The highest point reaches 2,188 m; this figure comes from Wikipedia and the Jambonairobi guide because Wikidata does not currently list an elevation. Grass-covered hills, forest, lava flows and the Kisula/Leviathan cave complex shape the landscape. Hiking around Satellite differs from a cave visit: walks follow open terrain and wildlife tracks, while caving requires lighting and a guide familiar with the passages. Trip accounts also describe tall grass, rough rock and limited water at campsites, so walking plans need to match the group and conditions. Kilimanjaro may be visible in clear weather.

Satellite is a walking base in the hills, at about 1,900 m according to Jambonairobi. Wildlife tracks offer different walks among hills and forest patches; the source does not define a standard traverse or multi-day duration. The 2014 guide describes the campsite as lacking water, so water needs and current facilities must be checked when arranging a visit.

The operator itinerary combines Kisula cave exploration with hiking based at Satellite. Jambonairobi describes an approximately 15 km approach from park headquarters to a cave entrance. The route is also accessible by 4WD; the quoted walking time is one way rather than the complete outing. Arrange a ranger familiar with the caves and check current access conditions.

A camping account describes a longer-than-expected approach, tall grass and turning back to leave time for caving. A lodge-based cave visit provides another approach, combining a drive with a short walk.
