Description

Chimtarga (5,489 m) is the highest summit of the Fann Mountains in north-western Tajikistan — a range within the Gissar-Alay system, widely regarded as one of Central Asia's finest trekking areas thanks to its chain of turquoise lakes such as Kulikalon, Alauddin, and Bolshoy Allo. The peak stands beside Energia Peak (~5,120 m), and the col between them, Chimtarga Pass (~4,740–4,750 m), is the highest point in the Fann Mountains crossable without specialised technical gear. Climbing Chimtarga itself is a different matter: expedition operators rate it a Russian-system 2A–2B route requiring crampons, ice axe, and rope work, normally staged from a base camp at the Mutnye Ozera lakes (~3,500 m). For most visitors, Chimtarga is experienced as the backdrop of a multi-day pass-crossing trek linking the Artuch valley with Iskanderkul.

Routes

Lintas Chimtarga Pass — Mutnye Ozera → Bolshoy Allo

Berat namun non-teknis — tanpa alat panjat, tetapi tanjakan panjang dan turunan scree lepas
1–3 hari untuk penyeberangan celah (±13 km)

This is the line most visitors actually walk: over Chimtarga Pass at about 4,740 m, the col between Chimtarga and Energia peaks and the highest point in the Fann Mountains crossable without specialised technical gear. The crossing runs from Mutnyi Lake (~3,510 m) to Bolshoy Allo Lake (~3,180 m), roughly 13 km. Many trekkers camp first at 4,100–4,500 m before topping the pass; note that water is scarce above ~4,200 m and the descent is dominated by steep, loose scree. Best window is mid-June to early September.

Puncak Chimtarga via kemah dasar Mutnye Ozera (kategori 2A–2B)

Sulit — kategori Rusia 2A–2B; butuh crampon, kapak es, helm, harness, dan teknik bertali
Bagian dari ekspedisi ±15 hari; serangan puncak dari kemah dasar ±3.500 m

The standard summit route offered by operators starts from a base camp at the Mutnye Ozera lakes (~3,500 m), which doubles as the acclimatisation and ice-training base before the summit push. Operators grade it 2A–2B: open to fit climbers with basic mountaineering skills, but still demanding full personal equipment plus competence in rope descents and roped glacier travel. The terrain includes hanging glaciers and steep moraine banks, with daily stages of 8–18 km and gains reaching about 1,700 m.

Trek pendekatan Artuch — Kulikalon & Alauddin

Menengah — trekking lembah dan celah rendah, tanpa perlengkapan teknis
2–4 hari menuju kaki Chimtarga

Most journeys to Chimtarga begin at the Artuch camp (~2,150 m), following the Kulikalon lake basin and crossing over to the Alauddin lakes before climbing to Mutnye Ozera. These stages double as progressive acclimatisation and form the most scenically celebrated part of Fann Mountains trekking. Field guides recommend arranging local guides or operators for transport to the trailhead and supply logistics.

Climbing Experiences

Most documented experiences on Chimtarga are not summit climbs but crossings of the Chimtarga Pass (~4,740 m), a trek that strings together the Fann Mountains' signature lakes: Kulikalon, Alauddin, Mutnye Ozera and Bolshoy Allo. The accounts below — from a solo trekker, travel-writing couples, and climbers combining the pass with neighbouring peaks — give a realistic picture of the grinding ascent, the loose scree descent, water logistics above 4,200 m, and the valley scenery that earns this range its reputation as one of Central Asia's finest.
