Information
- Elevation
- 6.263 m
- Country
- Ecuador (EC)
- Location / Range
- Cordillera Occidental (Western Andes), Chimborazo Province, Ecuador — protected within the Chimborazo Fauna Production Reserve
- Mountain type
- Stratovolcano (inactive / dormant)
- Volcanic?
- Yes — volcano
- Coordinates
- -1.4692, -78.8175
- Difficulty
- Strenuous (Alpine F/PD grade; glacier ascent with crampons and ice axe, ropes rarely needed on the normal route; the main challenge is the extreme altitude of 6,263 m and strong winds, not technical difficulty)
- Best Season
- November–February and May–July (Ecuador's dry season; March–April is the windiest and rainiest period and is best avoided)
- Permits & Rules
- A certified ASEGUIM guide has been MANDATORY since November 2012 (entry to the area is not permitted without a guide); the Reserva de Producción de Fauna Chimborazo entrance ticket is paid at the ranger post; book through certified tour operators/trekking agencies in Riobamba or Quito
- Hazards
- Acute mountain sickness (AMS/HAPE/HACE) from rapid ascent to 6,263 m; hidden glacier crevasses; serac collapse and ice-avalanche risk; very cold nighttime temperatures (−20 °C or lower); sudden weather changes; the Chimborazo glacier is steadily shrinking—route conditions change every season
Description
Chimborazo (6,263 m) is Ecuador's highest dormant stratovolcano and the highest point in the Cordillera Occidental. Due to Earth's equatorial bulge, its summit is the farthest point from Earth's centre — surpassing Everest by roughly 2,100 m — a distinction that makes it an iconic target for climbers worldwide. The normal ascent is a pre-dawn glacier push from Refugio Whymper (5,000 m) via the El Castillo route on the Thielman Glacier, timed around midnight so the snow remains frozen. Technically non-extreme — crampons and ice axe required, ropes rarely needed on the normal line — yet the extreme altitude and fierce cold winds make it a strenuous undertaking. Staged acclimatisation (ideally via Ilinizas Norte or Cotopaxi first) is strongly recommended. A certified ASEGUIM guide has been mandatory since November 2012.

Routes
El Castillo — Ruta Normal (via Refugio Whymper)
Berat (F/PD)The most popular line: depart at midnight from Refugio Whymper (5,000 m), cross the Thielman Glacier, pass the rock feature 'El Castillo', and reach Veintimilla summit (6,267 m) before topping out on Whymper summit (6,263 m). Crampons and ice axe required; rope rarely needed in standard conditions. Summit push takes 6–9 hours.
Ruta Boussingault — Jalur Selatan (Teknis)
Sangat berat (D; teknis, glasier & es)A technical line via the southern and southeastern flanks, featuring steeper glacier sections, complex crevasse fields, and requiring advanced ice-climbing skills. Rarely attempted by recreational climbers; intended for experienced alpinists seeking a greater challenge. Not accessed from Whymper/Carrel refuges — requires a separate approach and full technical gear.
Ruta Politécnica (via Refugio Carrel)
Berat (PD)Starting from Refugio Carrel (4,800 m) on the southern side, this route traverses the southwestern glacier (Chimborazo Glacier) to Veintimilla summit first, then continues to Whymper. Longer and with more crevasse exposure than the normal route; often used as a descent or as part of a full traverse. Crampons, ice axe, and a guide remain essential.
Climbing Experiences
Chimborazo (6,263 m), Ecuador's highest volcano and the farthest point from Earth's center. A pre-dawn glacier summit push that demands acclimatization; climbers highlight the cold, altitude, and Andean views.
