Description
Champagne Castle (3,377 m) is the second-highest peak in South Africa, rising in the heart of the uKhahlamba-Drakensberg UNESCO World Heritage Site in KwaZulu-Natal. Its unusual name comes from legend: a guide dropped a champagne bottle during an early 20th-century summit attempt. The peak cannot be reached in a single day from the main gate; the standard hike is a 3-day round trip with an overnight at Keith Bush Camp (2,350 m). The main route departs from Monks Cowl (Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife station) up the long Gray's Pass (~38 km total, ~1,900 m gain), demanding some route-finding skill where the trail is not clearly marked. An alternative and more extreme route goes via Ship's Prow Pass (3,300 m — the highest pass in the entire Drakensberg), but it is notorious for rockfall and has claimed lives. Best seasons are autumn (April–May) and spring (September–October). Afternoon thunderstorms in summer (December–March) are a real danger, and snow can fall above 3,000 m from April to September.

Starts from Monks Cowl, follows the Contour Path south to Del'mhlwazini River, then climbs Ship's Prow Pass steeply. Commonly done as a loop combined with Gray's Pass (ascend one, descend the other).
