Description

Cerro Tres Kandú, 842 metres high, is the highest point in Paraguay. It rises in the district of General Eugenio A. Garay, Guairá Department, on the border with Caazapá, crowning the Cordillera del Ybytyruzú — a forested ridge protected as the Ybytyruzú Managed Resources Reserve. Modest in altitude by Andean standards, the climb is nonetheless demanding: from the visitor base the trail covers roughly 3 kilometres of steep ground through humid forest, natural steps, rock slabs and several rope-assisted sections, usually taking 2–3 hours. Following upgrades in 2025 the operators added showers and toilets, video surveillance and Wi-Fi at the base, and reopened visits on a reservation system, mainly Friday to Sunday and public holidays. A camping area sits at the summit, and many hikers stay overnight to watch sunrise from the country's highest point. Access is normally via the town of Independencia or the district of Eugenio A. Garay; the surrounding Ybytyruzú forest is also ecologically important as one of the last humid-forest strongholds in the region.

Routes

Jalur utama dari basecamp pengunjung (Eugenio A. Garay)

Menengah — jalur berpenanda dengan tanjakan tajam, bidang batu, dan beberapa seksi dibantu tali
3.00 km Sekitar 2–3 jam naik

The official route starts at the visitor base at the foot of Cerro Tres Kandú, about three kilometres from the summit. It climbs steadily through the humid Ybytyruzú forest before opening onto rock slabs with several steep, rope-assisted sections — where the gloves included in the camping ticket come in handy. Visits require advance booking and a ticket, with main visiting days Friday to Sunday and public holidays.

Pendakian bermalam — berkemah di puncak untuk matahari terbit

Menengah — jalur sama, ditambah beban perlengkapan bermalam
2 hari 1 malam (naik sore, bermalam, turun pagi)

A popular variant is to climb in the afternoon and camp near the summit, so you can watch sunrise from Paraguay's highest point. The camping ticket is valid for two days and includes loan of climbing gloves; basic facilities such as showers are available at the base. Hikers still need a tent, water and warm layers, as ridge temperatures drop overnight.

Climbing Experiences

Ascents of Cerro Tres Kandú are well documented by Paraguayan creators and Spanish-speaking travellers: the drive to the base in the Cordillera del Ybytyruzú, a short but draining climb through forest and rock slabs, several rope-assisted sections, and a summit marking Paraguay's highest point with a camping area.
