Description
Cerro Catedral (2,405 m) is a granite massif about 19 km from the city of San Carlos de Bariloche, inside Nahuel Huapi National Park in Argentine Patagonia. In winter its slopes host one of Argentina's most important ski resorts; in summer the area becomes a trekking and rock-climbing hub. Refugio Frey, set beside Laguna Toncek near the Torre Principal (the massif's highest point), is a popular base for climbers on the vertical granite spires that give the "Cathedral" its name. A classic trekking route links the mountain's foot with Refugio Frey and is often continued as a ridgeline traverse to other huts in the park.

Routes
Panjat tebing agujas granit di sekitar Refugio Frey
Teknis — panjat tebing pada menara granit (Torre Principal & agujas)The area around Refugio Frey is famous as one of Patagonia's finest granite rock-climbing hubs. The Torre Principal—the highest point of the Cerro Catedral massif—and the surrounding agujas (spires) offer varied technical multi-pitch routes. This requires climbing gear, experience, and careful weather judgement given Patagonian winds. Refugio Frey serves as the climbers' main base.
SourceTravesía punggung (Filo del Catedral)
Menengah–berat — punggung terbuka, terpapar angin dan medan batuAn alternative to Refugio Frey follows the ridgeline (filo) of Cerro Catedral, giving wider panoramas but more exposure to wind and rocky terrain than the valley trail. This ridge route is often chosen as a circuit variation and calls for good weather and mountain-trekking experience. It is frequently continued as a traverse to other huts in Nahuel Huapi National Park.
SourceTrekking klasik ke Refugio Frey (dari base Catedral / Villa Catedral)
Menengah — jalur trekking bertanda, medan berbatu menjelang refugioCerro Catedral's most popular trail links the mountain's foot (the Villa Catedral area) with Refugio Frey beside Laguna Toncek. It passes through forest and valley before the terrain becomes rockier and more open near the hut, which shelters under the granite spires. Overnighting is possible at Refugio Frey or a nearby campsite. Summer (December–March) is the best window; Patagonian weather can change fast with strong winds. Registering at Club Andino Bariloche is recommended.
SourceClimbing Experiences
Cerro Catedral in Bariloche is one of Argentine Patagonia's most iconic trekking and rock-climbing destinations. Most climbers' material centres on the classic route to Refugio Frey beside Laguna Toncek—either up the valley from the mountain's foot or as a ridgeline (filo) traverse of Catedral—plus rock climbing on the surrounding granite spires. The accounts below show trail duration, rocky terrain, Patagonian wind, and the atmosphere of an overnight at the hut.
