Description
The Cederberg is a sandstone mountain region near Clanwilliam, roughly 300 km north of Cape Town in the Western Cape of South Africa. The range is named after the rare, endemic Clanwilliam cedar and is renowned for its dramatic wind- and water-eroded rock formations, thousands-of-years-old San (Bushmen) rock-art sites, and dark skies prized for astronomy. The Cederberg Wilderness Area, administered by CapeNature, is one of South Africa's most iconic hiking destinations — home to landmarks such as the Wolfberg Cracks and Arch, the Maltese Cross, Tafelberg, and its highest peak, Sneeuberg (about 2,026 m). It offers both day hikes and multi-day camping treks through a rugged, red-rock, Fynbos semi-desert landscape.

Routes
Maltese Cross
Mudah–sedang, sedikit eksposurWell-marked trail from Sanddrif to the Maltese Cross, a free-standing sandstone pillar about 30 m high that is the Cederberg's most iconic rock formation, backed by the Sneeuberg peak. The walk is relatively gentle and suits reasonably fit day hikers.
SourcePuncak Sneeuberg (2.027 m)
Berat (untuk pendaki berpengalaman)Ascent of Sneeuberg, the highest peak in the Cederberg at about 2,027 m, usually done as an overnight trip staying near the Sneeuberg Hut. It demands strong fitness, navigation and an overnight permit from CapeNature.
SourceWolfberg Cracks & Wolfberg Arch
Berat (scrambling; ada opsi celah sempit)Iconic route from Sanddrif that climbs steeply through the Wolfberg Cracks (narrow sandstone chimneys) then crosses a boulder-strewn plateau to the Wolfberg Arch — the largest rock arch of its kind in South Africa. Hikers choose the wide crack or the narrow crack, which requires scrambling over obstacles.
SourceClimbing Experiences
The Cederberg is one of South Africa's most iconic hiking destinations, famed for its dramatic sandstone formations and dark skies. Hiker accounts center on two icons: the Wolfberg Cracks & Arch — narrow rock chimneys requiring scrambling up to the largest rock arch of its kind in South Africa — and the Maltese Cross, a free-standing ~30 m pillar. Many wild-camp under CapeNature permits, combining rocky trekking, San rock art, and Fynbos semi-desert panoramas.
