Description

Cathkin Peak (3,149 m), known in Zulu as Mdedelelo ('the bully' or 'the one who shoves in'), is one of the best-known summits of the central Drakensberg in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. This flat-topped mass of basalt juts forward from the main escarpment, giving it a free-standing, imposing profile — the origin of its Zulu name. The name 'Cathkin' comes from Cathkin Braes, a hill near Glasgow, Scotland. Unlike many Drakensberg outings that are treks, reaching Cathkin's summit is a technical climb: it ranks fourth-highest among Drakensberg peaks accessible only by roped climbing, and was first summited in 1912. The usual approach follows Gray's Pass from the Monks Cowl camp, but the summit block demands several roped pitches and abseils and becomes extremely dangerous when wet or icy. Some databases (e.g. PeakVisor) list the height at about 3,183 m.

The most common line: start from the Monks Cowl camp (Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife), walk into the Mhlawazini valley and camp near the river (e.g. Keith's Bush), then ascend the steep Gray's Pass (pass top ~3,100 m) to breach the escarpment. From there the Cathkin summit block requires roped climbing and abseils on basalt to reach the flat top (~3,149 m). This is not an ordinary trek — technical skills and gear are required.

Climbing Experiences

Cathkin Peak is rarely done as an ordinary trek — climbers who share their experiences describe it as a technical mountaineering objective. The usual approach starts from the Monks Cowl camp (Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife), with a night near the Mhlawazini River (e.g. Keith's Bush), before tackling the summit via the Gray's Pass area. Reports describe steep escarpment terrain, several roped pitches and abseils on basalt, and strong warnings that the route becomes deadly when wet or icy. The panoramas from and around Gray's Pass — Monk's Cowl, Champagne Castle, and Sterkhorn — are repeatedly named as the main reward.
