No (non-volcanic)
Coordinates
-28.9503, 29.2014
Difficulty
Berat: pendakian pulang-pergi sehari penuh ~18–20 km dengan kenaikan elevasi ~1.400 m. Bagian akhir menuntut scrambling terekspos (kelas B/C) melewati Bugger Gully, Orange Peel Gap, dan rantai/tangga besi di dekat puncak. Banyak pendaki menyewa pemandu; sebagian jalur menuntut kepala dingin di ketinggian terekspos.
Best Season

Description

Cathedral Peak (known to the local amaNgwane people as Mponjwana) is a 3,004-metre free-standing rock summit in the northern Drakensberg of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Rising clear of the main Drakensberg escarpment wall, its sharp spire is one of the most recognisable silhouettes in the uKhahlamba-Drakensberg World Heritage Site. Geologically it is built of Clarens Formation sandstone capped by ancient volcanic basalt — an erosional remnant of the high plateau that today leaves dramatic rock towers. The classic route starts near the Cathedral Peak Hotel and Didima park office, covering roughly 18–20 km round trip with over 1,400 m of ascent, usually done in one long pre-dawn-start day. The trail follows the Mlambonja River valley, climbs steeply through Bugger Gully and Orange Peel Gap, and finishes with an exposed scramble aided by chains and steel rungs near the summit. Because of the exposure and the Drakensberg's notoriously fast-changing weather, many hikers hire a local guide, and mountain-rescue registration is required before setting out. From the top the view reaches the Bell, the Inner and Outer Horn, and the sweeping Drakensberg escarpment above the KwaZulu-Natal plains.

Routes

Rute Cathedral Peak Hotel (rute asli 1917, scramble Grade C)

Scramble non-teknis / Grade C; bagian akhir terekspos dengan chain ladder besi
9–12 jam (sehari penuh)

The main classic route to Cathedral Peak starts near the Cathedral Peak Hotel/Didima, follows the Mhlambonja River past Sherman's Cave, climbs steeply to Orange Peel Gap and Bugger Gully, and finishes with an exposed scramble aided by chains and a steel ladder to the 3,004 m summit. It totals about 18–19 km round trip with ~1,400–1,600 m of ascent, typically 9–12 hours. First climbed in 1917 and rated very challenging — mountain-rescue registration is required and first-timers are advised to hire a guide. There is no reliable water on the upper ridge, so fill up low down.

Route Segments

  1. 1

Cathedral Peak Hotel → Sherman's Cave (Lembah Sungai Mhlambonja)

Menyeberangi Sungai Mhlambonja dekat penetasan trout lalu menyusuri lembah menuju Sherman's Cave; pemanasan panjang dengan pemandangan tebing Drakensberg terbuka

  2. 2

Sherman's Cave → Orange Peel Gap

Tanjakan curam menyusuri punggungan menuju Orange Peel Gap; jalur mulai lebih menuntut dan terpapar

  3. 3

Orange Peel Gap → Bugger Gully → Puncak (3.004 m)

Bagian terakhir menembus Bugger Gully lalu tebing basalt dengan rantai dan tangga besi; scrambling terekspos menuju puncak—bagian paling berbahaya bila basah atau berkabut

Climbing Experiences

Cathedral Peak is usually climbed as one long round-trip day (~18–19 km, ~1,400–1,600 m of ascent, 9–12 hours) from the Cathedral Peak Hotel area. Hikers describe crossing the Mhlambonja River near the trout hatchery, pausing at Sherman's Cave, the steep climb to Orange Peel Gap and Bugger Gully, and a final exposed scramble aided by chains and a steel ladder to the 3,004 m summit. This classic route was first climbed in 1917 and graded C; the Drakensberg's fast-changing weather leads many to hire a guide and register with mountain rescue first.
