Description

Carrauntoohil (1,039 m) is the highest mountain in Ireland, rising at the heart of MacGillycuddy's Reeks on the Iveragh Peninsula in County Kerry. Composed mainly of old red sandstone shaped by glaciation, it features the Eagle's Nest corrie and deep gullies and sharp arêtes on its eastern and north-eastern faces that are popular with climbers. The most popular route climbs the Devil's Ladder — a steep, loose, eroded gully rising from Hag's Glen that is the crux of the ascent. The Coomloughra Horseshoe, linking Caher, Carrauntoohil and Beenkeragh, is regarded as one of Ireland's finest ridge walks. Because Atlantic weather changes fast and mist frequently shrouds the ridges, sound navigation is essential; a large metal cross marks the summit.

Routes

Coomloughra Horseshoe (Caher – Carrauntoohil – Beenkeragh)

Berat — trek punggungan dengan scramble berekposur (Beenkeragh Ridge)
1 hari (±12–13 km, 6–8 jam)

A circular route regarded as one of Ireland's finest ridge walks. It links the country's three highest summits — Caher, Carrauntoohil and Beenkeragh — via Coomloughra Glen. The Beenkeragh Ridge is narrow and exposed, demanding a steady head and clear weather.

Devil's Ladder (dari Cronin's Yard / Lisleibane)

Hiking menanjak dengan bagian scramble berbatu lepas
1 hari (±12 km, 4–6 jam pulang-pergi)

The classic and most popular route. From Cronin's Yard or Lisleibane, the trail follows Hag's Glen between two lakes (Lough Callee and Lough Gouragh), then climbs the Devil's Ladder — a steep, loose, eroded gully that is the crux — before the final ridge to the summit cross. Many hikers descend via the gentler Zigzags to avoid the loose rock.

Climbing Experiences

Climbing Carrauntoohil (1,039 m) is a long uphill mountain hike with one decisive scramble. The classic route starts from Cronin's Yard or Lisleibane, crosses Hag's Glen between two lakes, then climbs the Devil's Ladder — a steep, loose, eroded gully that is the crux — before the final ridge to the summit cross. Many hikers descend via the gentler Zigzags, or combine it into the Coomloughra Horseshoe circuit. Fast-falling Atlantic mist makes navigation important. The videos and trip reports below capture the Devil's Ladder, the Zigzags, and the panorama of MacGillycuddy's Reeks from Ireland's highest summit.
