Description
Capitol Peak (4,309 m / 14,136 ft) is one of Colorado's most striking and feared 'fourteeners' — peaks above 14,000 feet. It rises in the Elk Mountains within the Maroon Bells–Snowmass Wilderness of White River National Forest, in Pitkin County, about 14 km east-southeast of the community of Redstone. Ranked the 52nd-highest mountain in North America, Capitol is far better known for its technical difficulty than its height: its standard Northeast Ridge route is graded Class 4 and culminates in the 'Knife Edge' — a footpath-thin rock ridge tens of metres long with sheer drops on either side, which many climbers cross by straddling the rock for balance. The mix of extreme exposure, loose rock, and deceptive route-finding makes Capitol one of the most dangerous fourteeners in the state, and it has claimed several lives.

Routes
Knife Edge traverse (bagian kunci puncak)
Class 4 tereksposThe decisive segment of the Capitol climb is crossing the 'Knife Edge', a granite ridge tens of metres long with sheer drops on either side. Many climbers cross it by straddling and scooting along the rock for balance before continuing the Class 4 scramble to the summit. The extreme exposure and loose rock make this segment central to Capitol's reputation as Colorado's most dangerous fourteener.
SourceNortheast Ridge via Capitol Lake (rute standar, Class 4)
Sangat berat (Class 4, sangat terekspos)Capitol Peak's standard route starts at the Capitol Creek Trailhead, hiking roughly 10–11 km to camp near Capitol Lake. From there climbers cross to Daly Saddle, traverse the ridge to the 'K2' formation, then reach the famous 'Knife Edge' — a footpath-thin rock ridge with drops on both sides, often crossed by straddling the rock. The upper mountain is Class 4 scrambling on potentially loose rock to the summit. The route demands careful route-finding, high exposure, and an early start to avoid afternoon thunderstorms.

Capitol Peak (4,309 m) in Colorado's Elk Mountains is climbed via a Class 4 route that culminates in the 'Knife Edge' — a footpath-thin rock ridge with sheer drops on both sides. The videos below capture crossing the Knife Edge and topping out on what is considered Colorado's most challenging fourteener.
