Description

The Canigou (Catalan: Canigó; 2,784 m) is the highest peak of the eastern Pyrenees and the symbolic summit of Catalonia. It lies in Pyrénées-Orientales, southern France, less than 50 km from the Mediterranean, so its often snow-capped silhouette is visible from far away — until the 18th century it was even thought to be the highest mountain in the whole Pyrenees. Unlike a volcano, Canigou is an orogenic massif of metamorphic rock and granite-gneiss. For Catalans the mountain is sacred: a cross on its summit is often draped with the Catalan flag, and every 23 June (the eve of Sant Joan) the 'Flama del Canigó' fire ceremony is held there. The peak also inspired the epic poem 'Canigó' by poet Jacint Verdaguer. Ascents usually start from the Chalet-Refuge des Cortalets on the north side or the Refuge de Mariailles on the southwest side, crossing forest, high pastures and small lakes before the final ridge. The last hundred metres are a steep, exposed scramble up a rock chimney (the 'cheminée'), demanding care and a head for heights.

Climbing Experiences

Climbing the Canigou (2,784 m) usually starts from the Chalet-Refuge des Cortalets on the north side or the Refuge de Mariailles on the southwest side, crossing forest, high pastures and small lakes before the final ridge. The last hundred metres or so are a steep, exposed scramble up a rock chimney (the 'cheminée') — care is needed for falling rock and a helmet is advised. As the symbolic summit of Catalonia, the mountain is rich in cultural meaning: a summit cross flying the Catalan flag and the 'Flama del Canigó' fire ceremony every 23 June. The sources below — an encyclopedia article, a hiking guide and several vlogs in various languages — convey the trail conditions, the summit scramble and the mountain's sacred atmosphere.
