Description

Calbuco (~2,003 m) is an andesitic stratovolcano in southern Chile's Los Lagos Region, rising between Lake Llanquihue and Lake Chapo near Puerto Varas and Puerto Montt. Rated among the more dangerous volcanoes of the southern Andes, it slept for over four decades before a violent eruption on 22 April 2015 sent an ash column tens of kilometres high and forced thousands to evacuate. Unlike the guided crowds on Villarrica, climbing to Calbuco's crater means pushing through damp Patagonian forest and then scrambling lava and volcanic-scoria slopes to the rim, often passing the refuge wrecked by the 2015 blast. The route is physically demanding and largely self-navigated, with little infrastructure.

Routes

Rute Normal ke Refugio & Kawah (Reserva Nacional Llanquihue)

Berat (non-teknis, navigasi mandiri)
+1400 m 1–2 hari (10–12 jam pulang-pergi)

The main route pushes through damp Patagonian forest from the Llanquihue National Reserve, then climbs to the ruined refuge and scoria slopes to the crater rim. With infrastructure wrecked by the 2015 eruption, the trail is now sparsely marked and largely self-navigated; many climbers camp near the treeline before an early summit push.

Variasi Musim Dingin (Invernal) ke Refugio

Berat (bersalju, butuh perlengkapan musim dingin)
+1400 m 1–2 hari

A winter version of the normal route when the lower slopes are snow-covered—requiring crampons and extra gear. Parties often turn around at the refuge when the push to the summit becomes hazardous in deep snow and wind.

Climbing Experiences

Climbing Volcán Calbuco (~2,003 m) differs from Chile's guided-crowd volcanoes: climbers push through damp Patagonian forest, then scramble lava and scoria slopes to the crater rim, often passing the refuge wrecked by the 2015 eruption. Trip footage highlights the solitude, loose volcanic terrain, and fast-changing Los Lagos weather—including snowbound winter attempts.
