Description
Buachaille Etive Mòr — the 'Great Herdsman of Etive' — is a rocky pyramid massif that ranks among Scotland's most photographed mountains, standing where Glen Coe meets Glen Etive in the Highlands. Its highest top, Stob Dearg (1,022 m), looks near-perfectly conical from the A82, while the ridge runs southwest to a second Munro, Stob na Bròige (956 m). The usual walkers' route starts at Altnafeadh, climbs into Coire na Tulaich behind the famous rock face, then ascends steep scree with a short scramble to the main ridge — about 13 km with over 1,000 m of ascent, taking 6–8 hours to traverse both Munros. The coire headwall is the crux and the main danger: steep, loose and holding snow well into spring. For climbers, the Buachaille also holds legendary scrambling and climbing lines such as Curved Ridge and Great Gully Buttress, making it a Highland icon that blends postcard beauty with demanding terrain.

Routes

SourceClimbing Experiences
Accounts of Buachaille Etive Mòr are dominated by the walkers' route via Coire na Tulaich from Altnafeadh, traversing the two Munros (Stob Dearg & Stob na Bròige), with the crux on the steep, loose coire headwall. Thanks to its iconic pyramid shape, it is also a favourite of Highland photographers and videographers. Some take legendary scrambling/climbing lines such as Curved Ridge and Great Gully Buttress, which are far more serious.
