Information
- Elevation
- 1.141 m
- Country
- Jerman (DE)
- Location / Range
- Pegunungan Harz, negara bagian Sachsen-Anhalt, Jerman utara
- Mountain type
- Volcanic?
- No (non-volcanic)
- Coordinates
- 51.7991, 10.6156
- Difficulty
Kendaraan bermesin butuh izin khusus.
- Hazards
Description
The Brocken (1,141 m) is the highest peak of the Harz range and the highest point in northern Germany. Rather than a sharp summit, it is an ancient granite dome with a rounded top covered by blockfields and small patches of tundra-like vegetation rare in Central Europe. It is famous for its extreme weather: fog shrouds it nearly 300 days a year, winds have reached 263 km/h, and snow lingers for months — conditions that give rise to the 'Brocken spectre' (Brockengespenst), a hiker's shadow magnified onto the fog. The mountain is steeped in legend: Goethe set the witches' Walpurgis Night gathering here in Faust, and Heinrich Heine described it in Die Harzreise. Yet the climb itself is technically beginner-friendly — broad, well-marked trails such as the Goetheweg from Torfhaus and the Heinrich-Heine-Weg from Ilsenburg — and the Brockenbahn steam railway even carries visitors straight to the summit. The whole area is now part of Harz National Park.

Routes
Goetheweg — dari Torfhaus
Sedang — non-teknis, tanjakan bertahap, jalur lebar bertandaThe most iconic route up the Brocken, named after Goethe's 1777 visit. Starting from Torfhaus, it crosses peat bog and the forests of Harz National Park, follows the former border strip, then joins a sloping concrete track to the summit. Technically easy but fairly long and exposed to the weather higher up.
SourceHeinrich-Heine-Weg — dari Ilsenburg
Sedang — non-teknis, naik terus melewati lembah sungai dan hutanA historic route from Ilsenburg tracing the steps of the poet Heinrich Heine (Die Harzreise, 1826). It follows the scenic Ilse river valley, then climbs through forest to emerge onto the summit blockfield. Longer with more ascent than the Torfhaus route, but still without technical difficulty.
SourceClimbing Experiences
Hikers' accounts of the Brocken emphasise two things: the wide choice of trails to the summit and how quickly the summit weather turns. The videos show classic routes such as the Goetheweg from Torfhaus and the Eckerlochstieg from Schierke, through to the toughest Teufelsstieg, all threading the forests of Harz National Park before emerging onto the summit blockfield. Recurring themes: a fairly long but technically easy walk, fog and wind that often greet you at the top, and the distinctive summit scene with the Brockenbahn steam railway, weather station, and Brockenhaus.
