Description

Botev Peak (2,376 m) is the highest point of the Balkan Mountains (Stara Planina) and stands near the geographic centre of Bulgaria within the Central Balkan National Park. Until 1950 it was called Yumrukchal, then renamed to honour the Bulgarian poet and revolutionary Hristo Botev. Its summit carries a meteorological station and radio tower (opened 10 July 1966) whose broadcasts reach most of Bulgaria and parts of Romania and Turkey — a landmark that makes Botev's silhouette recognisable from afar. As an ultra-prominent peak (prominence about 1,567 m), Botev has a sharp ridge with steep northern walls and the well-known Rai (Ray) waterfall on its slopes. The easiest hiking route takes roughly 2.5 hours from the Rai hut (1,560 m), but the fast-changing alpine weather and rocky terrain still demand care; ascents from the Kalofer and Karlovo sides are the most popular gateways.

Routes

Apriltsi → hizha Pleven → shelter Botev → Puncak Botev

Menengah–sulit
2 hari (±1 jam ke hizha Pleven, ±3 jam hut ke puncak)

A north-side approach starting near Apriltsi (Mazrane locality), climbing ~1 h to the Pleven hut (1,385 m, 180 beds). The next day is about 3 h up through ski slopes, forest and steep rocky sections to the 2,376 m summit and the Botev shelter. Overnighting is advised for the windy conditions and to catch sunrise.

Kalofer → hizha Rai → Raysko Praskalo → Jalur Tarzan → Puncak Botev

Sulit — curam, scree berbatu, butuh kehati-hatian tinggi
±6–7 jam naik (±4,5 jam ke hizha Rai + ±2 jam ke puncak)

The most popular and scenic route, starting from Kalofer on the south side along the Tundzha River up to the Rai hut (~4.5 h). From there the trail passes the Raysko Praskalo waterfall — one of the tallest on the Balkan Peninsula — then climbs the narrow, steep, rocky 'Tarzan Path' for ~2 h to the summit shelter. The slippery scree demands extra care and good weather.

Karlovo → hizha Vasil Levski → Puncak Botev

Sulit — medan liar, untuk pendaki berpengalaman
±8–9 jam

A classic south-side route from Karlovo via the Vasil Levski hut through the wild terrain of the Stara Planina. One of the longer, more demanding approaches, recommended for experienced hikers. Watch the weather, carry adequate gear and follow the trail markers throughout.

Climbing Experiences

Botev Peak (2,376 m), the highest point of the Stara Planina, is most popularly climbed from Kalofer on the south side via the Rai hut and the Raysko Praskalo waterfall, then up the steep, narrow 'Tarzan Path' to the summit. Alternatives run from Apriltsi on the north side via the Pleven hut, or the long route from Karlovo. The videos and write-ups below show route variations, the windy weather at the meteorological-station summit and hut logistics.
