Description

Bogda Peak, or Bogda Feng (博格达峰; 5,445 m), is the highest summit of the Bogda Shan in the eastern Tian Shan, about 110 km east of Ürümqi, Xinjiang, China. Though far lower than the Himalayan or Karakoram giants, it is renowned for its extremely steep relief — its sides slope at 70°–80° — making it one of the most technical peaks in its region and the northernmost 5,000 m summit in Eurasia. It was first climbed on 9–10 June 1981 by an 11-member team from Kyoto, Japan; one member died in a crevasse fall on the descent. At the foot of its northern side lies Tianchi, or "Heavenly Lake" (Heavenly Lake of Tianshan) — a crescent-shaped alpine lake that forms part of the UNESCO World Heritage "Xinjiang Tianshan" and is one of Xinjiang's most famous attractions. For most visitors the "Bogda" experience means easy trekking and sightseeing around Heavenly Lake beneath the snow peak, while the summit itself is reserved for experienced alpinists via the glaciated northeast ridge from the Sangong valley side.

Routes

Jalur tepi Danau Surga (Tianchi / Heavenly Lake) — wisata & trekking ringan

Ringan (wisata) — jalur papan dan jalan setapak, ramah keluarga
Sekitar 4–6 jam (lingkar danau ~12–15 km); bisa dipersingkat dengan perahu/kereta gantung

A route circling Tianchi (Heavenly Lake), a crescent-shaped alpine lake at the northern foot of Bogda Shan, about 110 km east of Ürümqi near Fukang. The lake loop of roughly 12–15 km takes 4–6 hours on boardwalks and paths through spruce forest, with highlights including the Feilong (Flying Dragon) Waterfall and Bogda summit panoramas. The Maya Mountain viewing platform (reached by cable car and a short walk) gives the best Bogda views. The area is part of the UNESCO Xinjiang Tianshan World Heritage; best season June–September, with an entrance fee and shuttle/cable car.

Punggung Timur Laut (Northeast Ridge) — jalur pendakian puncak

The standard and only proven route to Bogda Peak's summit (5,445 m), approached from the Sangong River / Heavenly Lake side to the north. Base camp sits in the valleys above Lake Bogda at about 3,520–3,540 m, progressing through Camp 1 (~4,350 m), Camp 2 (~4,750 m), and Camp 3 as the summit-push camp (~5,170 m). The climb crosses glaciers with crevasse and serac hazards; it is for experienced alpine teams only. Registration with the Xinjiang Mountaineering Association (CXMA) in Ürümqi is required. Best window July–August.

Climbing Experiences

Experiences around Bogda fall into two kinds: the highly technical, glaciated 5,445 m summit climb (for experienced alpinists only, via the northeast ridge), and the far more popular sightseeing and easy trekking around Tianchi / Heavenly Lake at its northern foot, accessible to general visitors. The sources below document the mountain's profile, its climbing, and the experience of walking the Heavenly Lake area beneath the snow-capped Bogda summit.
